Travel from Milton Keynes to Sir Henry Floyd

Post by CaitlinW »

Can anyone give me an idea of the times that the bus from Milton Keynes to Sir Henry Floyd School leaves and returns, and how long the journey takes? We are in the west of Milton Keynes (Great Holm).

If your child travels from MK to Sir Henry Floyd, I'd be interested to know how he or she has found the experience of making this journey every day.

We are trying to decide whether this school would be a good option for our son, or whether to go for one of our local schools (Hazeley or Denbigh).

Hi. I think there will be a bus at about 7.15 if I remember rightly. There will be a few stop's within MK and I think there may have been one in TMA. You can ring and speak to Bucks Transport for school's department who can give you that information. The bus cost's appx £700 per year. There is only the one bus back as far as I know so if they take part in after school club's you will have to drive to collect them, or arrange with other's to take it in turn's as there will be a fair few travelling that way.

What school have you been allocated then? As I assume that both Denbigh and Hazeley will now be full? Or is your son possibly in yr5 at present?

Probably at the same school as my Midget then :)

There are lot's of people who travel from MK, Cats12 on this forum may know more info on bus stop locations, I am sure she will be along soon.

We were in MK but decided to move to a village nearer, for us we felt the journey would be too much and that he would end up not doing any after school clubs. This is partly down to the fact we have 3 children, so clubs etc to pay for for them and then having to go and collect him and drag them along was not ideal. Everybody's situation is different though and your's may be entirely different from mine.

Hi there, I live in another part of MK but the times midget man gave you sound correct as is the price of the bus, approx £750 for the year. The journey takes 45 mins to an hour depending on the traffice, which sounds onerous but isn't at all. The DCs love the bus and get to socialise with the boys and girls - a particular advantage for those at AGS and AHS as there's little contact otherwise (cept for yearly drama/show and club competitions such as chess and a disco in yr7!).
MM is correct in that you'd have to pick up after after school clubs so takes a bit of juggling if you've other DCs.
Many do travel from MK, especially to SHF :)

Many thanks to both of you for your help. We'll have to ponder the issues and make a decision. Unfortunately I don't think we'd be in a position to collect our son from after-school clubs at SHF, as we have two other children and other commitments, so going there would probably mean no after-school clubs for him.

Many, though not all, of the clubs run at lunchtime, as there are large numbers of children with the same difficulty after school, so it shouldn't limit opportunities for extra-curricular clubs too badly.

A further couple of thoughts - we have been very happy indeed with SHF and have chosen it again for our second child, but the distance is a definite downside. It's not just clubs, but parents' evenings, concerts, uniform fitting, collecting from days out etc. that require long trips into Aylesbury (and these increase if you send younger siblings to the same school). Your child may have local friends but is less likely to bump into school acquaintances round town of a weekend. Staying local is a big advantage for the whole family.

We feel that, within limits, it's as much about the child as the school, and looked for a school that was 'good enough'. I wanted to think our local comp was good enough, but it only sends a handful to university each year and, in the end, it wouldn't do. If a comprehensive such as Denbigh had been available, there is a strong likelihood we would have chosen it over the grammar, purely on distance.

Yes the grammars in aylesbury run many of their afterschool clubs at lunchtime so picking up after school isn't required that often (would be brilliant if Bucks transport did a late bus, say 5.30 for such occurrences as i'm sure there are lots of DCs needing late lift home each day - and we do pay quite a lot).
It is always difficult deciding whether to send DC local or further away - I still agonise have I made the right decision. I tell myself that many of my DCs friends are dotted all over the county and so no one seems to live round the corner so they'll not miss out (hol times there is a moderate amount of droppingoff/sleepovers etc...).
Also the ethos of the grammars is different and i think it is that that swung it for us - learning and the development of the DC is at the heart of their schooling whereas at good local comps discipline tops the agenda (has to because of the mix going there) in order for good learning to take place. Pastoral care is there but further in the distance.

It was also the ethos that swung it for us!. Also being around like minded children who were all of a good intelligence. There were quite a few nasty character's at his middle school and we didn't want to see him having to carry on being with those people at the local comp. Being away from that and he could do very well at school.
