WESTCLIFF HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
Thought i would start up a thread, like Southend mum, for anyone who has a daughter starting at Westcliff in September. Maybe we could share any information about induction days, thoughts or worries that we have on our daughters starting at Grammar school.
If there are any mums out there who have daughters that already attend the school then any comments/stories will be greatly welcome!!

Hi Joanne - my daughter will be joining yours at Westcliff in September, we are all absolutely thrilled!
It looks like she's going to be the only girl from her primary school going there - we were prepared for this but it is a bit of a worry because she's shy and doesn't make friends easily. She's also not good at speaking up for herself. I can't remember, as we visited 3 schools - is Westcliff the one that does the 'sisters' thing where each new starter has an older girl take her under her wing?

Hi,
My daughter started at Westcliff last September.
Yes they have a sister who is in the year above them,and they kind of show them the ropes and help them to feel at ease in the early weeks.
Before the term starts the sisters have an opportunity to write a note for the ones that are starting that September and they leave it in their locker,which then gets passed on to the new year 7.
In my daughters locker it had a note from her new sister welcoming her to the school and introducing herself with a few stickers attached to it.
Was a nice touch...
So my daughter will be doing the same thing this year with the new year 7 intake...
Feel free to ask questions if you have any worries,I know how anxious about it all we were this time last year

Is your daughter out of catchment like mine? My daughter is also the only one from her school who is off to Westcliff, so we too are a little worried about her making friends, though I'm more concerned about the travelling, bus or train???
may i ask what area you are from, we are Canvey island, which isn't too far from Westcliff but still quite a journey for an 11 year old, though i have heard from others on here that it becomes part of their socialising, and they really enjoy the journey!!
I would love to be able to take her myself every day but its impossible with 2 other children and work to contend with, I'm sure i am worrying over nothing, but it feels really odd knowing she will have to get on public transport
keep in touch, maybe our girls will become friends!

Hi there, thanks for letting us know about the 'Sister' thing, its put my mind at rest a little, its such a great idea too.
How is your daughter getting on at Westcliff? I bet she has settled in really well, and she probably doesn't even think about not being at school with her old friends from junior school eh!
did you say you were from Stanford le hope?? I grew up there and my older sister and brother still live there. Though like i said I'm in Canvey now.
Anyhow i'm going on a bit

My daughter is going to WHSG this Sept.
My daughter is going to WHSG at last! After two years hard pedaling, she is over the moon now. Her overall score is 339.67. My husband and I feel so relieved and proud of her. Good luck to everybody!

Yes that was why we liked WHSG, very traditional, and everyone there seemed very friendly, and the students were very polite, plus the orchestra blew my daughter away!! (She's a budding saxophonist)
We were thinking of moving to be closer to the school next year, as we were worried about the journey our daughter will have to take, but i am sure she will enjoy every minute of it! Plus it will help her become street wise and more confident I'm sure!
Does your daughter have friends going to WHSG from her school? Ours is the only girl going from her school, but i am sure she will make friends in no time.

My daughter is the only one from her school going to WHSG in September & can't wait. She is a little bit nervous about finding her way round but its nice to hear they have a sister to look after them for the first couple of weeks, I will let her know once Blue Peter finishes.
Her school are so pleased for her as she is the 1st person from the school to go to Westcliff High (they don't teach the 11+).
We are thinking about using the coach service as we live in Hullbridge & both work in London so the drive to Westcliff would not be possible. Does anyone have any information about the service good or bad, as I can't decided whether to use the coach or bus as both pass near to us for Westcliff.
Also do the the parents get invited back to look around before they start as my husband couldn't make the open evening.
