'The Archers' do boarding schools

Post by Susan »

The Radio 4 saga 'The Archers' is having a storyline at the mo about sending twins of the local landed gentry to boarding school. The mentions in the plot are fairly fleeting but the thread on the relevant BBC message board is quite entertaining, if descending into the usual state/private stances.

Enjoy!

Very interesting sqaubble and its gets quite heated from the middle. :D

The worst hypocrites are people like Cameroon who send their kids to state schools to be like one of us. For goodness sake give us a break. Is my child going to get the same education in the same school as David's child. NO and of course they have access to the best tutors. It seems some socialist throw all their beliefs on one side when it comes to their kids. Tony blair played the religion card and used the best tutors known to man from Westminister School.

As for boarding I am sick of people who slag it who have no clue what boarding life is like. Most have never stepped foot in one and base their belief on Jack at work who was at a boarding and is twisted or Uncle Tim who is wicked. Goodness I could count a lot more who are twisted yet never stepped foot in boarding. I am sure there are twisted people in the world from boarding and day school. Sure you get the Boarding Survivors but I hope to see Day School survivors soon. :D :D :D

Whoops! hope this isn't aimed at me! My "Jack" is someone very dear and close to me who was sent at 8 and was severely brutalised at boarding school - a death was involved and he was unable to drive through the town involved for over a decade as so traumatised, and my "Uncle Tim" is my mum who had never gone to school AT ALL until sent 250 miles away at 9. So, although great for some, certainly not great for all!
Sometimes one is just emotive in responses although admittedly each was a great many years ago and certainly things - partic the old pastoral which of course didn't exist in those days - must have improved exponentially. Still, experience albeit second hand inevitably informs opinion sometimes and I have one friend whose son loves his boarding school. But it's Millfield and very specific to his sporting prowess. And just because someone disagrees with a view on here (hopefully not presented offensively) I hope does not invalidate it or make them wrong.

But, back OT, won't Lizzie and Nigel miss Freddie and Lily terribly?? Must confess to not having listened much recently. Until they kill Ruth, preferably under a tractor driven by Susan, it's safest not to risk turning the radio on at five past 7. Though was delighted to find that Christophurrrr had married Alice. Classic. Jennifer related to a Horribin.

I heard a snatch today, of Susan grumbling away at a vegetable lasagna, having apparently wanted to do a lamb tagine but had somehow ended up with Joe's veg (errr? missed the beginning, no way can I - nor do I want to, shudder - guess how a lamb became Joe's veg under Susan's bothersome ministrations) as some sort of fatted calf effort for Brian and Jennifer, both of whom seemed to be behaving very well. Most out of character. There must have been a pep talk - perhaps Jennifer was promised a spending spree in Felpersham? Susan had to pretend not to want wine when Jennifer didn't, which made me choke with laughter on my own fat glass of sauvignon, but then I missed the end. I love Brian, purring away nastily. Just waiting for ickle Rory to have a fling with cougar Ruth (Dayviddd will be asleep, dreaming of fertiliser conferences) and my happiness will be complete (hmm, see I've written myself into a hole; Ruth will have to rise from the dead, knock up a frozen pizza, be tight-lippedly understanding with Peeep and THEN have a fling with Rory - not perfect, but it will do. No one will notice)

Rooooairy...surely?

Didn't Julia hide all the valuables upstairs because there were going to be Horrobins in the house? Have not been listening much recently but now think I have reignited a past love and found another addiction.

I have to hold my hand up ( or hang my head in shame ) and admit to being a member of The Archers ( or TA to those in the know ) forum. So, So, batty and it has been great fun this summer while my favourite forum has been rather quiet.
