Help with type thirteen please!

Post by Madhu »

Hi,

I am stuck with these two types. Can anyone please let me know the order of position for

(sergeant, colonel, corporal, major, private) which comes in the middle?

and the order of sizes for

( tug, liner, kayak, canoe, aircraft carrier)

Thanks in advance,
Madhu

This type appears in Walsh Paper 12 I think.

(sergeant, colonel, corporal, major, private)

order would be in order of rank:
(private, corporal, sergeant, major, colonel)

so middle is: sergeant

for

(tug, liner, kayak, canoe, aircraft carrier)

order would be in order of size:

(kayak, canoe, tug, liner, aircraft carrier).
Its debatable which is the biggest, liner or aircraft carrier, but as you're after the one in the middle, it doesn't matter which way round you put these two.

so answer is: tug

Yes it does appear in the last test, Book 3 from Walsh. A very starange addition, so I totally ignore as I use Walsh for practice not tests.

Susan Daughtrey uses this type in her Method and Techniques but these books are also not relevant to the 21 types of questions.

When I went through this paper with my daughter she immediately said "this isn't one of the normal types". I double checked the IPS list to be sure, but sure enough she was right and delighted in telling me "I told you so". I wonder why Walsh put in in their paper ? A mistake or do they know something we don't and its a type that might one day suddenly appear in the Bucks test ?

Patricia, would you say that the Walsh questions are okay to use for practice, that they are not too hard? I have been giving ds Bright Sparks papers to do under test conditions, and when he gets more than two wrong in a section, I print f some questions from Walsh and we go over them. I thought I was giving him an unfair reflection of the test by giving him these to practice on... what do you think?

DS is improving slowly but surely! He has started to score in his 80s now. 4 weeks left! :) :)

Thanks for everything!!!

Dear Jaysdarlin

Each test has a few harder questions, normally at the end of each section.

With Walsh I would cross off any maths questions that you need knowledge of BODMAS. I also explain to my students that these are hard , so do not worry if you get them wrong. When completing vocab sections children will often say "what does that mean" My stock reply, " I am not telling you, you have to make your good educated guess first, then we will discuss it"

I use Walsh for practicing those "harder" questions. Sometimes I never use them, it is child dependent whether I reach as far as Walsh.

I use for Lessons, section at a time in strict order:

IPS additional questions
AFN.
IPS [last 5 tests]
Madeliene Guyon intermediate followed by the normal standard.
Walsh

I use for tests in strict order:

My own little tests [based on the types I have covered in the lesson]
Ips [first 5]
The tutors
Bright sparks
GL Assessment.

Thanks for that. Its a really good idea to have a set for practice and a set for tests.

Hi Patricia,

Can you please let me know the ISBN number or the actual name for IPS Verbal Reasoning Test Books?
I have IPS which have daily tests ( 10 questions per test) Book 1 and Book2.

Are there IPS books with tests which have 80 questions each?

Many Thanks,
Madhu
