Tommies...what news?

Post by EmeraldE »

DS went to Tommies today impressions thusly:

1. More regimented 'feel' than Crypt or Pates. I don't mean this in a negative way. It just appeared structured.
2. DS liked it more than the other two.
3. I am not fully convinced and prefer to wait for the results :)

How did you find it?

I am liking the new look website, much more professional, even though it is not finished yet.

Yes, it looks a lot better. It's still new of course, but not the time to have the "Admissions" page unavailable (as has been noted on here before) ...

STR - a reallly good school for boys who like / need rules and regs.

Traditional, not a big pastoral focus (boys should pick themselves and dust themselves down)

It has avoided fads and is either old fasioned or traditional - depends on your view.

No girls to disturb the classroom.

Head is leaving at the end of the year for retirement - is that public yet?

Horses for courses.

Gloucsdad
Going to look at STR tomorrow with view to test next year. Is there a good new head waiting in the wings or is it wait and see? Do you think a getting a new head brings a bumpy couple of years till they settle in or is it all good? Not sure whether to be concerned or more interested!!! Have never been to Tommies before so looking forward to seeing it. I thought the (reasonably) new head at Crypt sounded very positive and ambitious for that school when we went to the open eve. I liked it better than I expected despite some tatty bits plus prefer cricket to Rugby for DS.

 No didn't know Kelly was leaving and feeling a little bit dismayed as I like old fashioned. I think they are the only school that have 35 min lesson's - big selling point for us re DS2.

Not sure what is expected re pastoral but would say that DS1 for various reasons had a tricky year but am on the whole pretty happy with how the school handled things. Mr Daniells head of year seven and Mr Morgan head of lower school can't be faulted.

Obviously it has its faults, like all schools communication can go awry but better than many.

I was always pretty anti single sex schools but when you only have boys you become more aware of how differently the sexes get treated in a school environment. So am now kind of glad they don't have to compete.

To sum up I am happy with STR but bare in mind I would probably have been just as happy with Crypt and any other school that was performing well and sensibly accessible.

Oh yes and swimming every half term that was a real seller for us.

He loved it.... :D (but loved Pates equally i think-for very different reasons)
Our opinion was as before, although the lad that showed them round did state,"you dont need to be super bright...just have a good tutor".....hmmmm....ok then  .....not sure thats the official school line though
