Would you do a review in this situation?

Hi all,

I am in the odd position of having a dd sitting the essex test and a dsd sitting the medway test.

DSD missed the passmark by twenty marks. Her mum spoke to the HT who said it was "worth a shot".

I'm worried thought that we're setting dsd up for a second disappointment. she was very upset about the results.
Is it very unlikely that she would get through a review with those marks?

Any insight would be helpful.

IMO whether to do a review ot wait to appeal in the medway would depend on a few factors.

has the primary got sufficent high level work in both english and maths, to submit for review.

What grammar the child wants to attend.

Are there any mitigating circumstances as to why the child did not pass.

I agree with tiredmum you need to consider very carefully if a review is the best way forward. Make sure you fully understand how a review works before making a decision.

If you have strong support from school and an excellent portfolio of work with no mitigating circumstances then a review may be a good option. If you want to be able to present other non-school information or mitigating circumstances then an appeal may be a better option.

It is a very difficult choice parents have to make in Medway.

Be warned that the scope of a LA review might be strictly limited. In Medway, for example, “Your child’s primary school will be asked to provide work in maths, science and English and this will be reviewed by a panel. Supplementary material supplied by parents or other agencies will not be admissible.” Unless you are confident of succeeding on this basis, and have the support of your current headteacher, it would be safer to opt for an appeal (without a review) where you are allowed to put forward other academic evidence or extenuating circumstances.
