13 plus

Post by mum of five »

I need some advice for a freind ,he has a very bright child in an upper school in year 8.He wants to know if its too late for him to apply for 13 plus . which year group is this test for ? If it is too late are there any other tests that he could get his child in to a grammar school.

I think, but I'm not certain, that for entry after 12+ you apply to the school directly and they will admimister tests usually based on National Curriculum rather than VR. A good place to start would be the admissions page of the website for the school he is interested in or the BCC admissions web page.

Hi mum of five

The 13+ process is managed by Bucks CC for all but two schools. All the information you need is here: http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/school ... -procedure" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Unfortunately the deadline to apply for 13+ testing passed a couple of months ago unless the child did not previously take the 11+ or has recently moved into the area.

If the child is a boy then Dr Challoners and Royal Grammar School administer their own admissions. The deadline to apply for testing at DCGS is 10th January and the application form is on their website. No deadline is specified by RGS, but testing takes place in the spring term.

Just to add to this. My DC transferred in year 10 (?14+). The tests were administered by the school and consisted of maths, verbal and non verbal computerised tests which adjusted the questions according to how they were scoring. Interstingly I found the whole thing much fairer than the 11plus - there was no coaching, no revision as we had no idea what was going to be tested, nothing to lose, just walked in, did the tests and waited for the resuklts. Just like the old days when I toom the 11plus!

The tests vary from school to school, as it is up to them what they examine. (Some might test curriculum subjects only, e.g. English, Maths, Science, some use a mixture, and at least one - I think - uses reasoning tests only.)

Except where immediate entry is being sought (by families moving into the area), tests for year 10 entry are usually taken during the summer term of year 9 (at the individual grammar schools).
