Help with some Maths Questions from Manchester Grammar schl

Can anybody help with the following quesstion?

Aidian 's car uses 70% of a full tank of petrol in travelling 560 Km. How far can it travel on the remaining petrol in the tank?

kilometres rather! 10% gives 56 k so multiply by 3 to give 168

Another challenging question:
Jim , John and Nick go into a shop and each shop and spend the same amount. Next , Paul goes in and spends the same amount as the first three put together. Finally, Neil goes in and spends the same amount as the first put together. In all, the five of them spent £96. How much did Jim spend in the shop?

Another one:

At the supermarket, a tower of tins of beans is made up so that at each level there is one less tin than in the level below. Each tin is 10 cm high and the tower consists of 28 tins in total. What is the height of the tower?

If Jim spent £10.66, that would give an answer of £95.94 - does that count as being £96 ?

1st one

I always look for number relationships, the actual arithmetic in questions is usually not that complicated.. ( the 7 and 560 in this case - I know 7x8 = 56)

70% = 7/10

so if 7/10 =560

1/10 = 560/7 = 80.

he can therefore travel 80km on 1/10 of a tank.

there are 3/10 left in the tank so he can travel 3x80km = 240 km

did neil spend the same as the first 4 put together?

if so

call the amount jim , john and nick spent each £a

so Paul spends 3a

neil spends 3a +3a = 6a

96/6 = 16 so Jim spent £16 ( I think!)

Is the tower 70cm high? Done by trial and error the bottom row being 7 tins
