Write out the aphabet on one line, with A at left hand side through to Z at right hand side.

Under letter B write Y
Under letter L write O
Under letter O write L
Under letter C write X
Under letter K write P

So you get
a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z
- y x - - - - - - - p o - - l - - - - - - - - - - -

Hopefully you can now get a glimpse of the required pattern.
The second line is the alphabet backwards

a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z
z y x w v u t s r q p o n m l k j i h g f e d c b a

Now find the letters of your second word on the bottom line

K is under P
Z is under A
G is under T
S is under H
V is under E

Gives you the word PATHE

The system has garbled my formatting. Count the dashes to see which letters should be under which.

A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O PQ R S T U V W X Y Z

Code for BLOCK is YOLXP

When I teach my children this technique, I do not re write the alphabet.

Child eventually recognises that this is the symmetry approach.

K comes in from the left 11, so 11 from opposite end is P
Z comes in 1 from left, 1 from opposite end is A
G comes in 7, 7 from opposite end is T

At this stage I would stop and check the answers having found 3 letters is usually enough to find the answer....

If not carry on and find the rest of the word using the same method.

Child should be fluent in the layout of the alphabet.

I always teach them the 5th letter = E, 13 th letter = M and 20th letter = T

Therefore child in the above example does not have to count fro A to K, they know M is 13 just count back to K making 11...

Is Duncan 20?

Isabella is 8
Last year she was 7
Sebastian is 3 years older than she was last year so he must be 10
Duncan is twice as old as Sebastian making him 20

Dear Guest

Is this from IPS test B Q38?

It says.....

Duncan is twice as old as Sebastian will be next year. Isabella is 4 [not 8]
Sebastian is three years older than Isabella was last year.
How many years old is Duncan?
