Trafford VR and NVR

Post by frosties »

I've just started to go through some Bond VR questions, with child no. 3.
She says some of the things I'm doing with her are not the same as school eg logic type questions and she doesn't need them. I'm confused. How many VR types are there in Trafford? She's also said her teacher has told them Trafford don't do cube nets on NVR either. We are getting her a tutor when they get a space but in the meantime I'd like to help her with only the relevant bits! Can somebody help?
Thanks

Hi Frosties and Welcome..

What schools is your daughter sitting for?

Can't answer on cube nets, we practiced them because they were in the NVR books but I don't know if they came up. My son found them particularly difficult (struggled quite a lot with NVR full stop actually )and so I didn't stress too much on them because there was so many other things to revise. I also don't know about the VR, but I would say that each school sets their own paper, so could vary. If it helps I will send you a pm with what papers we used for each and anything else you want to know?

Cheers

Thanks so much Tiddlymum
We're going for AGGS, SGS and Loreto.
I just wondered if the Trafford schools did 13 types or included other types I've read about on here.
Also the NVR paper is only 20 mins and that doesn't fit in with the NFER NVR papers I've got leftover from my other children. I was also thinking they can't fit in that many NVR types in 20 mins can they ?
Any suggestions in a pm gratefully received and if anyone else can help with the VR and NVR types that are tested that would be great.
Thanks

Hello, Frosties.

AGGS and SGS (Sale, I am presuming, not Stretford?) both have their VR papers set by GL Assessment and have historically covered the 21 types of questions set out in this link to our main website.

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/advice ... tion-types" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Bond books, while good practice, cover many more types of question (about 40 types, I believe) and therefore you risk wasting time covering stuff that won't come up.

I have no experience with Loreto but their VR is also set by GL (their website says NFER, which was the previous name of GL) so will be the 21 types as well (or maybe 15 types being all bar the HIKNOS types as explained in my link).

Re NVR, as the papers are set for AGGS and Sale by GL we concentrated on the GL papers for the types of questions that may come up and, as such, did cover nets. However, as you rightly say, the NVR exam is shorter in practice than the commercially-available papers and, therefore, presumably cover less types of question. As far as I recall, the 20 minutes is broken into 2 x 10 minute sections with 20 questions per 10 minutes. At the end of the first 10 minutes the kids go on to the second section and can't go back to the first section. However, my younger daughter is now in Y8 so my information is not current to this year's exam.

If you have a look on the VR section of these forums there is lots of useful information about resources and a suggested order in which practice should be attempted eg some authors' material is harder than others.

Frosties, Trafford mum is the expert so that sounds about right.

For Loreto there is no NVR but there is an English Comprehension which is quite important to the exam as well as an essay question. Its interesting given that Loreto has slience and maths specialisms but means towards English in the exam :D

Will send you a pm with details of what we did re papers

I'm not much use because we didn't do any work for the exams until the summer hols beforehand (we're not in Trafford either, so no teacher info) but we got the Letts GL assessment papers - they come in multipacks with English, Maths, VR and NVR. I think AGGS sell them, although I got ours from friends and amazon!

I'm still not thinking of starting with daughter no. 2 for a few months :D

Thanks for the replies.
There is no mention on this website how many of the VR types Trafford do and as no. 3 will probably be borderline I don't want to go over loads of types that won't be tested.
I also heard last year that on the NVR paper only about 2 types of NVR were tested.
I want to go easy on her as I have the attitude if she passes, great, if not then it's not for her. I don't want to put too much pressure on!

I understand. GL test the 21 types of questions set out in my link. They are the ones you need to prepare for.
I also heard last year that on the NVR paper only about 2 types of NVR were tested.

Again, I understand. The schools don't tell you exactly which NVR types will be tested but if you practice all types set by GL (see their papers for the types) then you will have covered all angles.

With Maths, you need to check with your daughter's teacher how much of the KS2 syllabus she will have covered by the end of Year 5 and then you will need to cover the extra bits (ie the rest of KS2) yourself. Examples of stuff not usually covered by the end of Year 5 are probability and algebra but there may be more. Some schools, however, will be working ahead of the syllabus so you may find these areas will be covered in time.

That's very useful information thanks.
I've also learnt how to pick up my email messages from this site !
Will continue to do bits with my DD until the tutor has a space. Hopefully I've not got too long to wait.
