Appeals confusion

Post by Sharky »

Hi
I am just at the very beginning to put an appeal together. I am already confused (which does not bode very well). I am unsure whether we are appealing for non-qualification, overscription or both.

DS passed 11+ but we are a couple of points below the cut off mark for 1st choice school. So are we now in the non qualified (for that particular school) and over subscription catagories?

thank you

Hi
Well i would say you are in the over-sub category as if the school had had less entries or more places your dc would have been given a place as they passed the test. However, it depends why you want to appeal. It is importnat that you say why this school is the best one for your child - it may be its specialism, transport or other reasons. If how ever you have actual reasons why your dc did not score higher on the day of the test then you can also include them. Was there a disturbance, was dc poorly etc.

I appealed last year to a school where my dd, even though passing, just missed the cut off by a few marks. I mainly concentrated on the fact the school suited my dd above others for various reasons and provided lots of evidence to show this. I did not have any reason why dd did not score higher so didnt mention that although her teacher at school gave me a letter confirming that dd was already working at level 5 at the time of the appeal, which i added to the evidence.

Hope this helps. Anything else just ask away.

Thank you tiredmum.

I will concentrate then on why that particular school with suit dc. It is not our closet GS so will not mention that. Also we do have some mitigating circumstances (not sure how strongly these will count) but I suppose I can include that to.
Were you successful in your appeal last year? Hope your dc is getting on OK.

yes we were successful and dd is at the right school for her. Have found out that there were about 30 appeals and 8 were successful so am pleased we were one of them. Couldnt have done it without this site.
It is really worth looking at the feedback sticky at the top of the appeals area as many people, including me, have written about their appeals there. If you cant find it i will post the link. The key is have a clear consise cover letter, using bullet points perhaps, explaining why you are appealing, and refer each point to an appendix containing evidence to back up this point. Cant have too much evidence. Good luck :)
