I thought this piece on the subject was worth drawing attention to. The latest craze at dd's school is tinychat and I was told of one child (participating from her bedroom with the laptop webcam "on" who realised only after the fact she had placed herself in a compromising situation. They thought this funny and relatively harmless as they were participating only with individuals (boys and girls) who know each other. However what they probably don't know is that anyone watching the video session could have used video capture software to record the images and then post them to utube or wherever with possibly awful consequences!
Recent surveys show a considerable number of children under 13 have Facebook Bebo or My Space accounts; as high as 80% to 90%.

Facebook bans youngsters under that age(13), but widescale abuse of their rules has been discovered.
Focus groups for Credos, a think tank which advises the advertising industry, found that 80-90 percent of under 13s were signed up.
Director Karen Fraser said: 'Parents have told us they don't want their children to miss out. They don't want to restrict their social life.'
The latest figures from the Advertising Association claim Facebook has 988,000 under-12s on the site in Britain. American founder Mark Zuckerberg wants the age restriction lifted.
