Missing 3 letter word

I have been wrecking my brains over this one.

Down stream the river wieds.

The word wieds is missing a three letter word to make it complete.

I cannot think of anything apart from DEN, making it widens or widened. However, it won't go.

I think this must be an error. Even my favoured crossword solver can't come up with any possible words!

It is an error....I remember seeing this on a practice paper and the word given was wis so it's den that's inserted making widens .
