level 5 sats in year 5

The breakdown of ks2/year 6 percentages for level 4 and 5 was useful to see. Does anyone know roughly what percentage of year 5 children get level 5 in their optional sats? I thought I read somewhere 10% but cant find it now.

Hi

I don't know of a breakdown of percentages at each level for Y5, though they probably exist somewhere. However, I don't think they would be very useful as the same tests are used every year. It would be possible that some teachers might do some coaching for the tests.

I don't do any prep for Y5 SATs, level 3A / 4C is supposed to be average for Y5, and this is roughly what I expect each year:

Maths - 25% level 5, 65% level 4, 10% level 3
Reading - 50% level 5, 40% level 4, 10% level 3
Writing - 10% level 5, 70% level 4, 20% level 3

There are reasons for this - there are not many level 5 questions on the maths paper so a very secure level 4 child can sneak into level 5. I think the reading test is on the easy side and children get the marks for level 5, but I might assess them as a high level 4. I mark the writing as I assess all writing - probably more realistic marks for Y5. Having said all this I'd expect all children who get level 5 and 4A to get level 5 in Y6.

There were level 6s and then there weren't and this year some schools have started doing them again. Doesn't it involve sitting another paper?
Didn't happen at DCren's school - although they did take a group out for 'level 6 booster' (Maths and English) while the others were doing 'boosters' for 4s and 5s so theoretically they could be given a 'teacher's assessment' level 6 even without the test? Doubt if the secondary school would thank them for that - it messes up their targets.

The level six was a separate test paper. My child gained a level six in Maths. Where has someone seen a breakdown of scores online. I would be interested to see the year four too, as been trying to find what they should be. In previous years I have been given a standardised score too, on an average scale of 80 to 130. But I only got a grade this year.

As usual poorly communicated on end of term report. Hand written level 6 for all subjects, English and maths. No explanation as to what it means, quite poor really considering some dc can be nervous by the exam experience. Well DS has broken up for summer so chilled now. I recall him and others sitting extension papers.

Nothing more recent than the 2005 test, so the figures may not be appropriate for the current optional sats tests. (particularly in light of wonderwoman's post)
