Help - estimation problems ?
Hi all
I have no clue how these problems are done with estimation - have always used the proportion technique - " this is to this so that is to how much " but looks like DD is expected to estimate - can someone make me understand please !
The question :
Given below is a table used for converting between grams and ounces :
24 gms = 0.85 ounces
40gms = 1.41ounces
5 gms = 0.18 ounces
Use the information in the table to convert 69 grams to ounces.
Ans : 2.44 ounces.
All help hugely appreciated !

Re: Help - estimation problems ?
Add them up.
24 + 40 + 5 = 69g
therefore 0.85 + 1.41 + 0.18 = 2.44oz
24 + 40 + 5 = 69g
therefore 0.85 + 1.41 + 0.18 = 2.44oz

OMG ! Both me and my DD could not stop laughing at how silly we had been ! This is what happens when you miss simple things in the pursuit of complex / difficult solutions !
Thank you soooo much for your help !

Re: Help - estimation problems ?
No problem. When doing this, you expect everything to be complicated so sometimes the simple way isn't as obvious as it should be.

I've been tellingbds to remember that it has to be possible to do every question in about a minute- so if he thinks it needs complicated calculations, he's missing something. This has helped him a lot- there are always loads of questions thatnyou can answernjust by looking -if you look in the right way. That, of course, is the tricky bit!
