secondary school place

Post by magwich2 »

I know at one time that there was a proposal that a school would have to keep the place of a pupil who wished to try another school for a certain period. Does anyone know if this ever came to pass?

DD is not sure what she wants and would like to leave her options open as long as possible.
Any info would be much appreciated.

What stage is she at? Sorry don't know if you can stay registered at one school while you try another one for a short while. Is there a risk that if she properly left school A to go to school B and then wanted to return to school A that they would have filled up her place in the meantime? If not, just leave school A properly when you have got a place at School B, and then leave School B and get a place back at A again. Clearly it's not that simple maybe or you would have done it?

There is something called dual registration but I believe this can only be used by Traveller familes.

Generally schools only keep a place open for 6 weeks. I am aware of some circus traveller families who are on roll but sometimes only attend for around 2-3 weeks each year when they are in the area - and they are on roll in schools elsewhere in the country - because they tend to do a set "tour" each year. Dual registration for "normal" children here only tends to happen when there are joint 6th Forms, so child may be accessing one course at one school and another at another school. The other dual registration children are often in the Hospital School but on roll at a mainstream school or receiving alternative education but still on roll at a mainstream to which they may return.

There are often arrangements between individual schools, particularly "managed moves" where one school will take another's "difficult" pupil either permanently or temporarily on the understanding that if it does not work out well the first school will take them back and that the other school will be happy to do the same in return. However, these are essentially private arrangments between schools. Usually when you are taken on roll at one school you automatically are taken off roll at the previous school as soon as they receive the confirmation that you are at another school.
