What methods do Crested Schools use?

Post by mystery »

I've read lots recently about Crested Schools, and combed my way through the CrestED website. But I feel like I'm missing something as I don't know what methods any of them use to improve reading and writing of dyslexic children.

Anyone got any direct experience who can shed some light on this?

Mystery,

My DC is at Crested school and to the best of my knowledge there is no standard approach, though DC school uses Alpha to Omega but I don't know how closely they follow it. I don't believe they rely soley on this approach and you would need to contact individual school and ask them what techniques they use. I would also advised you that the teaching in these schools doesn't rely soley on a single method but a series of complementary approaches for instance the use of multi-sensory teaching methods and smaller classes amongest other things. You may even find that a school does not use a specific method but has developed a programme which they believe works. You could also ask the school where the staff go for specialist training for example the Helen Arkell Centre and their level of qualification for example.

I would also recommend that you ask the school for a copy of their Crested report, I don't believe that it is available from the Crested site. You might also ask what external support from Speech and Language therapist, occupational therapy etc, is available.

Crested is a good starting point to sort out some of the wheat from the chaff in terms of specialist schools, but you really need to narrow the list down and ask more probing questions of an individual school.
