GL assessment Pack 2 Test 8 question 49

Post by Everythingcrossed »

Can anyone help with this tricky Z question:

Bury, Highpark, Priory, Lands and The Green are primary schools.
They all competed in a Year 6 football knockout.
Each school played all the other schools.
The only schools that did not draw any matches were Highpark and Lands

If these statements are true, only one of the sentences below cannot be true.

Which one?

A Each school played 4 games
B Bury drew two matches
C There were 3 drawn games
D Twenty games were played in all
E Priory won the tournament

The answer is D but we cannot see why!

Thanks

OK, fools leap in where angels fear to tread ...

I am afraid that the more I have looked at this question, the less I like it. Firstly, it uses the concept of "cannot be true", rather than "must be true" which I not aware has appeared in any other sets of papers. Secondly, it requires specific general knowledge, something that the 11+ is not designed to test.

That knowledge is of the way that a football knockout tournament is organised (and mine can be written on a postage stamp, so others should feel free to disagree with me).

If each school played every other school, that amounted to 20 games. There would therefore presumably have to be at least one further match to determine the winner, and therefore there had to be more than 20 games.

However, there is nothing to say how the tournament was won. If, for example, it was decided on Won/ Lost/ Goal Aggregate, and one school was already victorious without the need for a final, then statements A and D would both be true.

Maybe I'm missing something though - the mere mention of footie does strange things to my brain. :?

Renaming the teams, a b c d e

the matches are

ab
ac
ad
ae
bc
bd
be
cd
ce
de

going down the list, I haven't included "ba" as a match, because that is the same as the match "ab". (The same will then apply to the other letters)

So as long as the teams only played each other once then D is not true as only 10 matches are required.
