Help please

Post by willow_catkin »

We have been looking at number questions and have managed to work out some complex ones, but one has me stumped; it is

6 [12] 18 7 [19] 12

8 [ ] 12

The answer is 10 which I can see from the first (add them togetehr and halve) but cannot get the second to tie in - help please?

The first sequence is add together and halve 6+18=24/2=12

The second sequence is add together 7+12 = 19

The third sequence is add half together 8/2+12/2=10

Hope this helps!

Hi,
All 3 have to be worked out the same way, I am also puzzled with the 2nd one, have had a go.
I tried 6(12)18 6x2+18=30
minus 1st no. 6 then divide by 2=12

It works for 1st and 3rd not 2nd one.

Are the numbers correct for 2nd one?
Im sure Sally Anne or patricia will soon come along, sorry.

New to these particular types of problem (the 9/10 age Bond books we are doing haven't got these in yet). Is my earlier explanation not right?

I think the instructions for the question were that you had to do the same thing to the first 2 and then apply it to the third - trouble was there didn't seem to be anything that could be done to the first 2 that would bring up the answers given (in base 10 anyway  ).

The first one and the "unknown one" with answer 10 - could easily have been W"add the two and halve the answer - hence the reason why the second one doesn't look right. .... seems we have tried this none before!

It looks like an error, given that 7 + 12 = 19. For some reason, they forgot to halve it in the second case, and chose numbers which aren't divisible by two without a remainder, as well.
