It's one of those stories again....
It is from a rather unreliable source in terms of newspapers but still unless the people are actors,it would appear to have a grain of truth.I have children at an Essex grammar school and really - this is madness. The alternatives here in Essex, especially the areas mentioned, are really not that dire that you would put your child through this - crazy....or not?

Do you think it was the journalist who posted here? (you beat me to it, HM)

Oh, it must be.... we get a mention about halfway down
The thing is, articles like this add fuel to the fire.... parents tutor because other parents tutor and the cycle just goes on.
One parent over the summer, realising that we hadn't sent DD to a private tutor, simply declared that she couldn't possibly get in without it (We don't know yet, the results aren't in until saturday). But, we didn't want to go down that route, we want DD to be at a school that suits her.... we don't want to overtutor only for her to struggle at a grammar.

Then the problem of oversubscription is solved! All the children who win places at the Grammar schools can just be awarded their A levels automatically and go straight on to University - thus freeing up places for the next tranche down.Marylou wrote:"11+ harder than A-levels"

I believe she also took this quote from one of the forums maybe.‘On the day of the exam, you see children crying, wetting themselves, or being sick. I have to prep my children that that’s what they will see and not to let it faze them.’

The competition is ,in many ways, harder than at A levels. In the areas with super selectives, children can miss out by a fraction of one percent. If your local alternatives are truly worrying ,(which isn't really the case here), then the whole process and competition is harder than A levels. No re sits and no clearing system too.

Very good points, Chelmsford mum - it is about the only test you can never retake - but good point too that the Essex schools really aren't that bad. Essex has a bad enough reputation in the media already without these articles re-enforcing the idea that all the children who don't get into Essex Grammars are consigned to a sink school with zero chance of a good future.Chelmsford mum wrote:Marylou wrote:"11+ harder than A-levels"

Probably explains why there is no appeal system for universities. (Good grief - imagine what a can of worms would be opened if there were!)Chelmsford mum wrote:Marylou wrote:"11+ harder than A-levels"
