Help is needed to find the answer of this NVR Q below and the rule of doing this type of NVR.

Thank you very much in advance for helping out.

Well done on posting the question!

Had a quick look, it goes far beyond 11+, and what you could reasonably expect a ten year old to complete in thirty seconds.

Not 100% sure but here is a go! Label the four quadrants 1,2,3,4 starting at 1 o'clock and working clockwise.

Look down the first column, A B A

What do A have in common, Quadrant 1 black

Second column D C D, D = (Q1 black) Q4 white

Third F G G, G = Q2 black, Q3 white

Fourth J H H, H= (Q2 black), Q3 white

Apply to the unknown,

Not an A type so must be B

Not a D type so must be C

BC-- so must be answer a?

Checking

Not G so must be F
Not H so must be J

BCFJ

Never seen one this hard at 11+. :)

Thank you, stevew61.
But , please help me to understand what did you mean or how did you figure out that
- Second column D = (Q1 black) Q4 white ? Q1 means = ? in clock ?
-Third G = Q2 black, Q3 white ? Q2 means = ? in clock ?
- Fourth H= (Q2 black), Q3 white ?

By the way My DS is doing under 11+ practise.

Hi, stevew61,

Let me make my question simple.

Why did you go to Q4 white for Second column D?

Then I see that for Third column you came back to Q2.

What is the reason or rule ?

By the way, my DD who is doing this under 11+ is saying your answer is correct but I am confused.

Thanks.

Ask your DD to explain by pointing, I often have to get DC1 to help me and DC3.

I had to devise a way of describing the shapes,

Top right quadrant is Q1
Bottom right quadrant is Q2
Bottom left is Q3
Top left is Q4

For the second column we have D or C or D, so what do the two Ds have in common? Q1 is black but we have already assigned this to A so disregard (this requires a bit of a leap of faith, I'm not convinced by it), so what else do they have in common, Q4 is white.

I'm not solving the quadrants in order as that does not suit the way the information is presented. I am looking for commonalities in the given codes?

Have you tried looking at some easier codes or a method and technique book, if you learn the basic rules on easy questions then you have a better chance of solving very very (IMHO) hard questions like this.

Thank you very much and now it is clear to me.
My DC also explained the same way you did but I was confused until your reply.
Then again I am stuck on this question as well and need your help!

Using the method described by stevew61,
The answer ought to be d) MZP

M= white vertical lozenge ear-like bit
Z = black lip shape
P = white doggy nose bit

(sorry I saw it as a dog head)

First part of code L M M.

What do M and M have in common? White elipse to the left or black background fill on the ink blot shape. :)

Z X Z

Z Both have black squashed pentagon

P Q Q

Q White elipse or black fill on ink blot

Not sure this is resolvable! Because codes two and three both contain M and Q.

Stretching the logic, and guessing, looking at unknown it has a black squashed pentagon so a Z type. Has a white background so either LZ- or -ZP, so answer b or d?

I might be wrong, happy to learn if any one knows, but to me looks like a tricky and badly written question!

Not using the standard NFER symbol set, which set of papers did it come from? Looks like one of the sets I don't use Letts or CGP?

Final thought as a guess use left to right logic so L M M relates to the elipse so best guess answer (d).

My head hurts off for a lie down.

I think that was what the author intended but the background fill on the ink blot confuses, the squashed pentagon/black lip/boat shape  sits on top of the blot/doggy nose bit, I can't ignore the black or white of the blot.

But I used your method stevew61

first letter refers to lozenge M= white L= brick pattern
second letter refers to lip/boat Z= black X= white
third letter refers to blot/doggy nose P= white Q= black
