Re: Question
4 apples + 4 oranges cost £1.20
so 1 apple and 1 orange cost £1.20/4 = 30p
we know that 1 apple and 3 oranges cost 62p
so the cost of the extra 2 oranges is the difference between 62p and 30p = 32p
1 orange therefore is 32/2 = 16p.
then feed this back into the 1st equation
3 apples + 1 orange = 58p
3 apples + 16p = 58p
so 3 apples cost 58p - 16p = 42p
1 apple costs 42p/3 = 14p
so 1 apple and 1 orange cost £1.20/4 = 30p
we know that 1 apple and 3 oranges cost 62p
so the cost of the extra 2 oranges is the difference between 62p and 30p = 32p
1 orange therefore is 32/2 = 16p.
then feed this back into the 1st equation
3 apples + 1 orange = 58p
3 apples + 16p = 58p
so 3 apples cost 58p - 16p = 42p
1 apple costs 42p/3 = 14p

In this case it is easier if both prices 58p and 62p are added up
as 3a+1o= 58p
and 1a+3o= 62p
add----------------
4a+4o=120p
thanks
