Please help to solve this one!
I kind of got the answer, but need to get a method to explain to DD.

3 apples & 1 orange cost 58p
1 apple & 3 oranges cost 62p

What is the cost of 4 apples & 4 oranges?
Answer: £1.20

What is the cost of 1 apple?
Answer: 14p - Please help me to get a method to get this answer, as I just tried different numbers to get the answer

What is the cost of 1 orange?
Answer: 16p - Please help me to get a method to get this answer, as I just tried different numbers to get the answer

4 apples + 4 oranges cost £1.20
so 1 apple and 1 orange cost £1.20/4 = 30p

we know that 1 apple and 3 oranges cost 62p

so the cost of the extra 2 oranges is the difference between 62p and 30p = 32p

1 orange therefore is 32/2 = 16p.

then feed this back into the 1st equation

3 apples + 1 orange = 58p

3 apples + 16p = 58p

so 3 apples cost 58p - 16p = 42p

1 apple costs 42p/3 = 14p

hi,
In this case it is easier if both prices 58p and 62p are added up
as 3a+1o= 58p
and 1a+3o= 62p
add----------------
4a+4o=120p
