Ealing Council...Problem with Grammar schools allocation

Post by hasmum »

Hi,
I was very distressed yesterday as ds passed bucks and slough tests and we did not get any GS school offer but a local school. (ds got 124 for Herschel)

There was a statement regarding not receiving info from other LA.
I rung Ealing and was told there was a problem with the Grammer school allocations and to ring the schools direct to see if we have been offered.

I rung Herschel and THANK GOD they had us down, letters went out yesterday 1st class, so should get today, I'm so relieved had such an awful night, very restless.

Ealing said to call back and let them know, but will wait for letter before calling back.
So to all who did not receive an offer from slough consortium who feel qualified ring the schools on your CAF

Thanks hasmum,

We're in the Ealing Borough, and they have been very unhelpful.
When I rang in the morning, the lady just told me to wait for a letter, and hung up. Then my wife
rang in the afternoon, and their addmissions office was closed for 1/2 day!!!!!

My daughter got 123 in Bucks and 117 in the Langley consortium papers, and yet
she has been refused by all 5 grammer schools and has been allocated a local state school.

We too have had a sleepless night, and are very distressed.

We've been strongly advised by the council email to accept the state school.

Hi,
I have just received my offer letter from Herschel and the offer from Ealing LA which was a local school. It seems like the schools are posting the offer letters as per norm.

Its better to ring the slough consortium school directly to see if you have been allocated or on their waiting list. If you dont get Langley they may allocate slough or Herschel depending on their cut off scores.

Good luck, a minor technical problem is a parents major anxiety! :x

Hi all,

My daughter got 123 in the Bucks exam and 117 in the Langley-consortium exam.
On the CAF form, our order of schools was :

Langley
St Bernards
Slough Grammer
Hershel
Burnham
Greenford High (state school in Southall)

My wife rang Langley and they said that my daughter is on the waiting list. And that we should ring back next
Fri to check. This is fine, but I thought that as we didn't make the Langley initial offer, we would have been
allocated a place at St Bernards.
Anyone have any views/opinions on this please?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi punjabi,

St Bernards has a very different criteria for admissions.

I would suggest that you ring both St B's and Slough Grammar tomorrow to see whether they have offered.

You may get an offer letter in the post from one of them in the morning.

Thanks for posting that. I think it is possible that the waiting lists for Langley, Slough or Burnham will deliver.

As Berks schools gradually work through their waiting lists, some people will turn down Burnham. (I think it is fair to say that the two Berks schools would probably be preferred by many parents, mainly for historic reasons.)

Burnham is currently allocating to 13.509 miles, nearly 4 miles further than last year. In previous years that sort of distance on 1st March has become "All Offered" by September.

You will need patience, but it does seem as though the Ealing problem is becoming clearer, and one of the waiting lists seems likely to produce something.

Just piping in to say that we were DELIGHTED to turn down an offer from Herschel in favour of BGS and have never had cause to regret it :D

St Bernard's Grammar's admission criteria is based on religious faith and then within these categories rank order and distance to school.

Hi all,

The latest with our application is this. On our CAF, we had the order
Langley
St Bernards
Slough Grammer
Hershel
Burnham
Greenford High (state school in Southall)

We rang Langley, and they say that my daughter is on their waiting list.
I rang St Barnards this morning and they say that they don't even have my daughters name
on their list! "Did we put them down on the CAF form?" I was asked. My heart is pounding
at this stage. They suggested I ring Ealing council. A quick phone call to them and they say that they
sent the CAF details to Slough council in Nov, and it's must be something to do with
them. I cannot get through to Slough council and apparently, their admissions dept
may only be open on Wed and Fri. What is going on?!
I then ring Slough Grammer to ask if our daughter in their list - and they said that she will
only be on their list if Slough Council tells them to either make her an offer or put her
on their waiting list. And the lovely lady explains that the council will
only instruct one school to do this. This makes me calm down a little. As we are on the Langley
waiting list, we cannot then be put on anyone elses.

So, can someone pls let me know if my undertstanding so far (and it changes
with each phone call!) is correct :
- Slough Council told Langley about our daughter - they put her on the waiting list (she got 117)
- if Langley reject her in the next couple of weeks, then Slough Council should tell our no 2
choice (St B) about our daughter to see if they can offer her a place
- and so on.... down the list.

I would sincerely love people's views and feedback as I feel I don't fully understand how
the process works.

Thanks in advance.
