Help - Closest in meaning

Post by lakshmi »

Closest in meaning

( master butler maid ) ( man servant original )

Was doing this question with my DC ( one of the old papers from a friend, do not know the title, but corrected by someone). DC said the answer is maid and servant, but the answer is master and original. I understand master and original make more sense, but I am not able to explain why is it a better choice than maid and servant. Can you help please?

I would have said master and original as they both mean the same thing - think master copy and original copy.

The other words all have gender inferences attached to them.

(Once again this may be a very good example of why I am using a tutor for ds!)

lakshmi, you have been tackling this set of papers for nearly 15 months now. Has it not occurred to you that:

a) they really aren't very good;

b) your child should have moved on from them by now?

why don't you google the words or try a dictionary, that would definitely show that master/original is the answer.

Thanks everyone. We did explain to her about the gender associated with maid and servant.

Master and original are similar in meaning.
A maid is an example of a servant. I don't think the gender issue is necessarily relevant here.
One wouldn't say raspberry was similar in meaning to fruit.

I agree, its nothing to do with gender and I don't see how that helps.
