Bonds 9-10 Bk 1 help please Paper 10 Q33-37

Post by JaysDarlin »

Hello

Paper 10, q: 33-37 - Its the first time we have come across this sort of algebra, and ds was bewildered - how to explain this?

eg:

In a cafe, four people are sitting at each table. There are P people and n tables.

You then have to match it up to the correct algebraic equation, which is P=4n

This seem to be the first time algebra has been introduced in Bonds, I think, and I think its a bit of an advanced starting point. Can anyone advise how to teach this sort of question to a 9 year old? Ive looked in AE and Bonds How-to and haven't seen any examples let alone explanations.

Thanks.

You need to draw this and tell that P and n r just noting more than names as they have the name of there tables and classes in schools
Kids understand things better by practical examples
P = people
n = tables

4 on each table means 4 on each n
An there we know it's times so 4x tables
That is 4x n
And in algebra we don't write X( times) as it is a magic sign
So total people = 4n
An instead of total people we write it's name P
So now. P =4n

It's the way I tell my son .... Try it good luck

I agree with shipra. Explain that it's shorthand, like texting. P is just a short way of writing people. N is the shorthand for tables. (If he questions the logic of why it's n not t, explain that the letter doesn't have to be linked to the word, anymore than his class name is linked to what sort of children are in the class, it's just a name.)
