Manchester Grammar School for Boy - preparation and pointers

Post by rimi01 »

Hi,
I am new to the forum and would like some help with MGS 11+ exam preparation. My son will go to Year 4 and I know its bit early, but I am doing all research now and would appreciate any help.

I don't want to go through early entry system because he tried in Year 2 (for Y3) and didn't make it. This time I want him to go well prepared because we sent him blank the first time

I live in Altrincham and DS goes to a good prep school, is doing his music, sports etc . He is above average, but not extra ordinarily brilliant .

If you've prepared for MGS, what should I do with him in Year 4 (Does he need tutoring?) and also in Year5 ? I will come back to forum in Year 5 with some informed questions. But for now, is there anything that I should do ?

Please PM me Tutour recommendations.
Many Thanks and Regards
Rimi

YOu may be better posting in the Independent forum and using the full school name? Because there are a fe schools known as MGS I think?

Sorry, I thought its a Trafford forum, so people will know MGS, I have edited it with full name. But since its a Trafford school, I think I will get help here than at Indi forum.
Thanks

Have you asked the teachers at the prep school? - I would have thought that they may have much experience of Manchester Grammar entrance and would be able to advise.

Perhaps they do extra work for those they are putting in for the exams etc

It is in their interest to maximise the chances of any of their children taking independent exams

Our Prep school teachers are not in favour of private tutoring. I have to find out from what other moms are doing.
Thanks

Elphaba - I know MGS is not a Trafford school, but its 20 mins from Trafford and many Trafford kids go to MGS. Since there is not Manchester forum, so I thought this place is best to ask about MGS.
And if your friend went in Year 5, he would not have prepared ad just gone for Assessment day. I need to know Year 7 entry exam.
Thanks for your reply.

Thanks Jugglermum. Your advice is exactly what I got from senior boys ' moms - Keep the son happy, do some quality sports and music activities and keep up with school work and reading, mental maths in Y4.
I have been told that unless your son is struggling in class, keeping a private tutor in Y4 will be disastrous. So am just going to follow that advice too.

And I am not discounting Alty Grammar for Boys at all. I got advice for AGBS from my school circle, but for MGS, I needed some more help . Thankfully I got it all from here.
