Need urgent advice please!!!

Post by kbear »

Hi all,

I'm new to this and need your advice. My DS has currently moved back into the country after completing primary school overseas.

KCC would not accept an application for secondary school before he was physically living here permanently, which effectively was last weekend.

Having done all our research and school visits, we decided we would like him to attempt entry to a grammar school as he certainly has the ability. I have called all schools in my areas to assess waiting lists and have been advised to apply and let him sit the exam either in Aug/Sept. We are applying to Darford, Wilmington and Gravesend Grammar Schools and Leigh Tech, with our favourite being Gravesend due to proximity to home.

This means we essentially have 6-8 weeks to get him prepped and ready for the tests!! He is being such a star and is willing to try his best knowing it will involve daily tuition sessions and study over his precious summer holidays.

What I need from you all, is advice on the best study guides to buy for the Kent test, where I can get similar exam questions / past papers and the any good tutors to coach him in the Medway - Dartford areas. And any other tips you can offer to a very stressed mother would be much appreciated.

Thank you so much.

Hello Kbear

Good on your son for being prepared to do the study needed in preparation for the Kent test.

There is a sticky at the top of the Kent board with the most useful and relevant materials to use. We are using a mixture of Bond age 10-11 10 minute tests and the the GL assessment papers which I understand to be close to the real exam.

I am not sure how lucky you will be with finding a good tutor as most tutors get booked up quite a bit in advance.

Good luck with it all.

Hi Kbear,

Have you considered the Medway grammars as well? Rochester/Chatham areas may be accessible from where you are and as Medway has a different 11 plus system it would effectively give your DS two bites at the cherry.

Good luck to your DS

Following on from MadHatter's post... depending on where you live, you might be too far for the Math School (if you don't know, this is Rochester boys GS, short for Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School if you need to look it up) as they are always fully subscribed, but Chatham Boys are accepting a Kent pass for 2013 entrance. Chatham Boys are usually undersubscribed (falling rolls in Medway) so distance wouldn't be a problem.

So it might be worth doing some investigation into whether or not it is worth taking the Medway test as well (not the same as the Kent), but you would still have at least one option of a Medway GS even without the extra test.
