Current king Edwards yr 7....advice pls.

Post by lottie78 »

Hi all,
As the time is quickly passing and the test is looming I was after abit of info on how the current yr 7s have got on in their first year.
Ds is having a major wobble about sitting exam, not actually taking the exam but actually worrying about passing, he has gone from a little boy that was desperate to go to ke to a little boy panicking about leaving his friends, not coping with bus journey, hours and hours of homework and having no free time for a social life. To be honest a lot of these are also my worries.
He is still only 9 and I feel awful that he as so many anxieties.
I've tried to explain that the friends you have in yr 5 are not necessarily the friends you will have when you leave secondary school. Our local comp would stream them based on sats results anyway so he would most probably not be in class with his current friends anyway.
It is getting harder to coax him into doing extra practise and I feel like he's not trying anymore. I think he is hoping I say let's forget it and you can go to the local comp, but then the next day he might say " if I get in to ke".....
I know he would be very lucky to get in and if he was offered a place then he deserves to be there but it is so difficult to see him struggling with all of this plus the usual things that a 9 yr old goes through.
I'm hoping some of you may be able to advise me on how difficult / enjoyable the first yr was for your dcs!!!
Thanks in advance
Lottie

Lottie, I totally sympathise with you and your DS. It is such a stressful time. Are there not any others taking the exam from his school?

From what I have heard , KECH and KEFW are more likely to give the more intense studying. However, KEAS and BV are more relaxed and the emphasis is not on moutains of homework. I'm sorry, I can't give you any personal experiences, this is just what I have heard from other parents :)

Good luck!

Snap!! They were mine and my DS worries too 2 years ago. I think it is perfectly natural. Moving to secondary school is scary enough without the thought of doing it on your own and travelling a distance to get there.

My DS is coming to the end of his first year and I have to say that our worries were completely unfounded. He has made loads of friends (Most of the boys were on their own so all equally keen to make friends). The experience of DC of friends of mine who have gone to the local comp seems to be that they make new friends anyway. The bus journey is the highlight of the day. (Green Bus) It is a time to socialise, make plans to meet up at weekends, try to talk to the girls :o and do the odd last minute revision of French vocab. (or that's what he tells me  )

Homework has been daunting and he has found it difficult to get organised, but that's just him, I'm sure others take it in their stride.

He also still has plenty of time for a social life!!

In my opinion (and his, he's told me) is that any sacrifice is worth it to be at such a great school. (KECHB)

Go for it :D
