12 plus

Post by SadDad »

Thought I would start a 12+ thread. (and SA said I should)

We will have no firm information until September, and I suspect it will be a case of keeping a cool head and trying to keep DS motivated whilst not becoming boring...

The KS2 assessments are here, we have top maths and science and should be safe English results. After our shock and disappointment with the whole 11+ trauma we are very proud of DS, and have not been making any assumptions.

It has to be said that the 11+ result has given us a far more motivated and able student and has been a real wake up call for DS. (oh so frustrating!)

We could presume not a lot will change, need level 5s for English and Maths if you sat the 11+ or a nice note from the head teacher if you haven't. (DD needed the note but that was a few years ago now)

However we plan to wait until September and just continue with quiet preparation.

There is an excellent link on the thread about the SAT results if you are finding the new English part confusing. I have stolen it and posted it here -

http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/tea ... sh-formula

I believe the 12 plus questions have minor differences from the 11 plus and the main difference is more questions in less time.

Good luck all.

See this too:

Some schools now set their own 12plus.

I think everything is still a little open at the moment. That is more of a proposal although likely to be correct. This link is where it says no information until September 2012.

The information on the link that scary mum posted is from the agreed Admission Policies of each of the 13 Grammar Schools. They were published in January, the consultation period finished in March and the Admissions Policies now have legal force. The few details that we have about the tests are therefore extremely unlikely to change.

The BCC link might be updated in September to include timings and the application process for each school, but I think it is far more likely that it will just read "Contact the School directly" where the school is administering its own tests.

For the four grammars who have elected to continue to use BCC's testing process I doubt there will be any significant change from previous years.

OK. That is quite helpful then.

It will be interesting to see what happens. In my current 'don't take anything for granted' frame of mind however, I shall still be waiting for September.....

Can anyone confirm if it is possible to gain a grammar school place at appeal following an unsuccessful 12 plus exam (having also failed the 11 plus)? I must admit I thought that if a child is unsuccessful at the 12 plus exam, you could not appeal for non qualification in that exam.

Yes, you can. (What happened in the 11+ does not affect your right of appeal.)

Etienne: Thank you very much for your prompt reply. Presumably you must have extremely strong academic evidence to support a non qualification appeal at the 12 plus exam?

Strong academic evidence, yes - not sure it needs to be extremely strong.

As with an 11+ selection appeal, the more evidence of well-above average ability, the better!

The link above is their release on 12 plus entrance criteria. Stolen from another post....

It looks very similar to me, just the change on the new English SAT result presentation.
