Just guessing, but is it the standard/formal method for long division where you drop down the next number to the sum you have done underneath?

That's what I understood it to be. On a lot of American websites I've looked at (to remind myself of the long division process  ) they refer to 'drawing down' or 'dropping down' the next number.

Ah thank you for solving the mystery.

Do you know at what NC level teachers tend to cover it these days? Or does it depend on the teacher?

Not sure about NC levels but the reason I had to look it up was because my DS did it two thirds of the way through year 3 and needed help at home 'getting it'. Some of the kids at the top end of the set had already done it in Kumon ..... But when I trawled through the internet trying to find stuff, it seems a lot of schools (who put their curriculum for each year group on their websites - wish ours did ) only seem to start covering it in year 4.

Gosh that sounds early. I think some schools don't do it until much later even with top sets - year 6 even?

I can see their reasoning. I do think some of the basics, such as 'bus stop' division should be properly bedded in first.

I'm not sure when DD's school do it. I've signed on to Car**** Vor******* arithmetic school and it looks as though DD will cover it on there sometime during year 4 if we keep up the homeworks on there at 5 per week ......... aargh.

That website is a HUGE waste of money - she is NOT a teacher.
