STUCK ON ONE WALSH QUESTION - PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME!!!
Can anyone work this question out or have Walsh made an error?
We worked out all the other ones but this one has us stumped!!
If the code for SWIM is HDRN, what does YOFV mean??

The answer is BLUE.
These are mirror image codes.
A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z
If you imagine MN is the mirror, all letters either side are mirror images..
YOFV
Y comes in 2 from the right, its mirror image is 2 in from the opposite end =B
O comes in 12 from right, mirror image is 12 from left = L
F comes in 5 from left, its mirror is 5 from right = U
V coes in 5 from right, its mirror is 5 from left = E
If you put 1-13 over A to M and 1-13 over Z to N it becomes more obvious, I tried but the spacing would not let me!

Is the easy explanation that if there seems to be no obvious pattern then it may be mirror imaging??
We've mainly tutored from home ourselves and with my daughters motivation to pass, but we sent her to one session going over some techniques with one tutor and maybe one more session in the summer as we simply can't afford it.

It is perfectly OK to DIY.
I teach my children how to spot these by looking at the first letter of the code and word.
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
IF the code for BLAME is DNCOG
The 1st letter from the Word is B, first letter from the code is D as both B and D are close to each other on the same side of the alphabet, it cannot be a mirror image code.
If the code for BLAME is YIXJB
The first letter of the word is B, first letter of the code is Y, they are opposite ends of the alphabet, check if they are mirror = yes as they both come in 2 from opposite ends.
At this stage the child MUST check another letter, choose a letter that comes close to one end of the alphabet.
A comes in 1, but X comes in three....so will not be mirror image.
If the code for BLAME is YOZNV
The first letter of the word is B, the first letter of the code is Y, these are mirror images. Check another letter. A and Z are mirrors, continue with this method.
This all may seem long winded, but I can I assure you, it takes a couple of seconds to check, practice makes perfect.
