Bexley exam 2013

Post by LauraA »

Hello
I have been reading you for a while and learnt a lot, never posted anything though....but since it is now exactly one year left until my daughter takes the exam, I feel it is the right time to become part of this comunity.
She will be taking Bexley and Kent exams next year.
A few questions to start with, for Chis and Sid, does anybody know what their catchment area is? We live 6 miles away. Do we need to be in the 180 score (I hope this is the correct score!) to stand a chance because we live to far away?
DD started tutoring April this year (only VR and NVR), and now we have incorporated Maths, VR and NVR into 1 hour of private tuition a week, and I do a lot with her as well. She is OK with English, Maths is her weak point, but hopefully will get there
We are at the moment doing Bond books, level 8-9 years at Maths (weak point!!) and 10-11 in VR and NVR (still making a few mistakes but it's all about learning vocabulary).
Which are the best books to work on for Bexley exam?

Sorry, a lot of questions and this is only the beggining..... :?

Hi LauraA. I too have a DD who will be sitting Bexley tests next year. A good idea is to go onto the Bexley Council website, find the education section and secondary schools. There will be a link on the right-hand side to the Secondary Schools booklet for entry next year. This will give you an idea on how far from the schools children lived and were offered places. I have just checked for C&S - it says the last two years they went out to 6.2 miles, so it is perfectly possible for your DD to be offered a place without needing to be in the top 180.

Having looked at the booklet myself, it appears the Council are carrying out a review of the tests, but I don't think there is any info as yet as to which aspects they may be looking to change (if anything!)

Thank you for your reply christmasbonus!
Do they calculate the distance in straight line (like drawing a straight line on the map from my postcode to theirs), or do they calculate the distance on the actual road from my house to school?
I will check the website as well, thank you.

Has your DD started preparing for the exam? We are taking it easy and enjoying the ride, rather than get very desperate....but still! I feel so nervous already!!

They calculate distance by walking route I think (I suppose in practise that is by road!).

We have done a bit of preparation so far, not too much (don't want to frighten her!). It is nerve-wracking. It's second time round for me, as DS did it two years ago, but I still feel as though I know absolutely nothing! I suppose it will all come back to me. One book I found particularly useful was the Bond "How to do 11+ Maths", although I think there are other similar books on the market. It helped me a lot!

Good luck, and I'm sure there'll be others joining us here soon.

It is also worth aiming to be in top 180 that way you can forget about distance. We were only a couple of marks away...if ny son learnt to use his watch !

Yes of course we are aiming for the 180 score, and fingers crossed we won't have to worry about the distance, but I'd rather be prepared with all information, than get very confused and all over the place when it comes to it.

The exam is the only topic of conversation in my house (between my husband and I, I wouldn't stress my DD with this already!), and I have a feeling that we don't do enough, or we don't do the right thing, working fromt he right books etc...it's only panic I think!
Yes we are working from the Bond books at the moment, had a go at the sample paper exam for Maths on the Bexley council page, she struggled a lot, but I know Maths is her weak point, so Im sure with hard work we can get her up to the required level ( I hope  ).

Christmasbonus, is your DD trying for other schools as well (if you don't mind me asking)?

what is your distance ? use google maps walking distance (i believe it is more than the bexly council GIS)

then look at the bexley handbook and see where you fit in

far as I remember Chis and Sid went out to 6.1 miles eventually....it has the biggest catchment area; but it may be april/may before you get an offer

Also I would recommend you using a tutor with some experince....it is worth the expense that way you can aim for the top 180

I am only really thinking of putting DD in for the Bexley tests, mostly because of the Specialisms of the grammars here, they just happen to fit in with what DD is most interested in.

As for aiming for the Top 180, I would think the mark varies slightly from year to year, so I think basically it's just a question of the children doing their very best.

And yes, I am panicking already but I was like this last time. I feel as though I need to get DD to do a bit more, but it requires my time and energy too, and I don't always have that!
