Re: bodmas
Depends on whether or not you have a maths test. Essex has the peculiarity of BIDMAS for maths and none for VR! I gave up with pupils and decided that I would rather they perhaps lost 1 mark in the VR and understood maths properly.
Re: bodmas
Is it the younger child who hasn't been taught BODMAS and is doing the 11plus?
How old is she now? If she could understand BODMAS I'd teach her now whether or not it's needed for her 11plus.
It's not difficult. In fact, faced with that question, there are too many different ways to do it if you don't know BODMAS and a bright kid will realise that and be confused by maths.
Also they should know from the work that they have done on multiplication that 37 lots of 461 plus 63 lots of 461 is the same as 100 lots of 461. So BODMAS should really come quite "naturally". The concept here is a level 2 or level 3 one e.g. 12 times something is the same as 10 times it plus 2 times it.
The teaching of some basic primary maths does become unnecessarily long-winded in some schools it seems to me.

Here multiplication and addition are there. So,
37 x 461 + 63 x 461 =17057 + 29043=46100
