WGBS, how do we know how many people in front of us?

Post by 11nuts »

Just wondering how do we know whether to apply to the school or not.

We live in the inner catchment of the school and scored a mark which was above last years minimum which entered. However this does not tell us how many people will apply with a higher score from the outer area.

Is the preference to take from the inner catchment first and then the outer?

Huck sake this is confusing!

The allocations to the inner and outer areas are completely separate. I can't remember the exact splits but the Watford Boys website will give you these details.

11nuts - the allocations to inner and outer areas are separate. If you live in the inner catchment area and have a score over 238 (or, in fact, anywhere around that) you should apply to Watford Boys if it is genuinely your first choice. According to the WGSB website, the lowest score offered a place from the inner catchment area in 2012 was 238 and in 2011 and 2010 was 239.

The figure of 238 was the lowest score offered by September 2012. The lowest score offered in March 2012 was higher (240 I believe, or 242). So if you're anywhere between 230 and 240, you could apply and be prepared to sit tight on a continuing interest list if you're not allocated a place in March. There is no absolute way of knowing what will be the lowest score allocated a place this year I'm afraid and living with the uncertainty is going to be a part of this whole process - but historical data suggests anything under 235ish is unlikely to get a place.

Best of luck. RR

Thank you. Looks like a positive result for DS.

Quick question. For results outside the catchment area do a tied score then go down to distance? So hypothetically if a DS living outside the catchent area got 45 out of 45 in music and 7 others also from outside did, would the 7th place be decided on distance? Unlikley I know but in principle.

From the Watford Boys website:

"In the event that two or more applicants are equally entitled to be offered a place under a criterion, it will be offered to the applicant whose permanent home address is nearest to the school, using the method applied by Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) and data provided by them."

So yes, Magoo, if you are talking about Watford Boys then your hypothetical 7th place would be awarded to the boy whose permanent home address was nearest to the school using the computerised mapping system.

If you're talking about another school, check their admissions arrangements. They are all published on the school websites.

Hope that helps. RR.
