Levels for sats
At the end of key stage 2, do the children get levels i.e 5B etc or is it just a straight level 5?
They just get a straight 'Level' i.e. 5 but some schools give you a breakdown according to the mark a child got within the level.
You can find the threshold tables here. Just scroll down the page for 2007.
http://www.qca.org.uk/qca_11983.aspx
If you take the range of marks within the level (i.e 70 -100) and divide by 3.... then 5c would be 70-80, 5b 81-90, 5a 91-100.
This is just a rough guide to where your child is within the level.... just reached it....working well within the level or ready to move on to the next level.
Hope that helps.

I assumed the school must use the "divide by 3" rule of thumb to give levels, but I was interested to see that the QCA published level threshold tables for the optional tests in other years do not always follow this pattern. For example in the Year 4 tables for English Reading:
Level 4C : 28-32
Level 4B : 33-39
Level 4A : 40-44
and for Maths:
Level 4C : 38-42
Level 4B : 43-46
Level 4A : 47-55
Makes me wonder how valid the schools' own levelling for SATS tests is.

My son's SATs results were given as Level 5 across the board for Teacher Assessment and then the Test Results were as follows: Reading: 5a, Writing 5c, English Result 5b. Maths 5a. Science 5a. We were even given a printout of the threshold tables as a further guide to the results. How's that for helpfulness!
The breakdown of scores at 5a were as follows:Anonymous wrote:Dear KN
Could you please give the level thresholds for 5A in all subjects.
Many thanks.
English: 91-100 (Level 5: 70-100)
Writing: 47-50 (Level 5: 37-50)
Reading: 45-50 (Level 5: 33-50)
Maths: 94-100 (Level 5: 79-100)
Science: 75-80 (Level 5: 62-80)
It also stated on the report:
a = nearly achieved the next level
b = achieved the level
c = just achieved the level.
This is the first year I have seen such a breakdown for the scores and found it easier to understand and more meaningful than just being given a number.
