Is This Good Enough for Kendrick?

Just got DD's year 5 report and as usual it was stunning.
In this years SATs she achieved level 5's for English reading and writing and for maths too.
Naturally I am really pleased and proud but still unsure if I should put here through the Kendrick experience. Being in catchment for Wokingham's excellent girl's comprehensive I wonder if I'm putting too much pressure on her.

If she wants a shot, go for it. Nothing ventured.....etc etc

Superb fallback, of course.

Yr 5 girls went on a science day over there this Wednesday, all came back singing it's praises. Whilst the boys, including my son Went on an Enterprise day at the all boys version. (Would much rather of done the science, as he'd thoroughly enjoyed the Kiwi DNA experiments at the 'EM' a couple of weeks previously).

If you don't try you will never know................try in a non-pressure way?

Start slowly and gently see how daughter copes, she might enjoy the "puzzle solving" aspect of VR/NVR.

You are fortunate that you can try for Kendrick and have a good plan B, Wokingham's excellent girl's comprehensive, so their is no real pressure.

Just read this and had to post.

My daughter had 3 top level 5 SATS in Yr 6 and was always top of her class. Everyone assumed she would go to Kendrick. She sat the exam and did not get a place. Not even the waiting list!

There follows 5 years of the local comprehensive. Many friends, lots of extra-curricular fun, Duke of Edinburgh awards etc.

She has just go 11 A* GCSE results!!

Kendrick could not have improved these at all (but it didn't stop her brother going to Reading!).

It is good that your daughter did so well, guest2007.

It comes down to the old dilemna grammar v comprehnsive (good).

As parents we trust more grammar schools than comprehensives because the straight results results are better. It would be useful to have results broken into ability bands.

I totally agree that a comp can give just as good an education as the Grammar. My sister went to Grammar and got 1 O level. By the time it was my turn the system had changed and I went to a comp. I got 12 O levels.
However my DD wants to go to Kendrick!

Don't get me wrong - I fully support Grammar schools. My daughter desperately wanted to go, and my Son goes to Reading where he couldn't be happier!

I'm glad you also have a choice. I suppose I was on a high after results and had a moment of "Yah Boo" to Kendrick for upsetting her sooo much 5 years ago by not letting her in! She would have done much better at the Boys entrance paper with comprehension, an essay & Maths, and not just the VR NCR paper.

I also wanted to encourage anyone who doesn't get in to not get too down. If your child is willing to work they should succeed.

Good luck to everyone. I hope you all get places at the schools most suited to your children, where they can enjoy themselves and flourish.
