H = % A grade per entry (core subjects)
I = Number of A and B grades per candidate (core subjects)
J = % candidates at least AAB (core subjects)
K = % candidatess at least A*AB (core subjects)
Following a post by somebody else I found this on the FT website and found it very interested, I was very surprised at the data especially column H (% A-grade) that varied from 16% to 78%. Also the last column (A*AB) varies dramatically from 2% to 47%, as I see school as a stepping stone to higher education the figures have only made my decision making even more confusing, seems the more I find out the more confusing the decision making is getting.
Fortunately now in a position to be able to consider CHG or FW and now probably in an even more confused state, slowly favouring CHG only because at the higher end of the grade (col:k) they seem to do slightly better, is this a fair assumption. I.e. is there anything I need to be aware of that has not been reflected in the table.
Sorry dont mean to offend but I naively thought that the private schools would come slightly lower as entrance was based on a mix of academic and financial conditions, whereas free grammars selected soley on academic abilities, surely that would mean the free grammars should be ranked higher than they are being shown at the moment, or am i missing something?

Fantastic statistics learningfast.
Surprised to see hardly any difference between CHB and FW. Considering FW take nearly double the candidates as CHB and they cater for both sexes, they are doing a fantastic job and must be applauded.

We love FW and to achieve what they do with the numbers is most impressive, CHG seem to snip them by a small margin at A* grades. With ref to CHB and FW they are freakishly close, with only small diff in A* attainment, but to achieve such great results with a much larger volume of students certainly makes you view the FW in another light.
Clutching whatever straws one can find in the pursuit of clarity!!

There can be sharp changes in individual years, you have to look at several years' positions to get a proper sense. That particular one is last year's table (2011 table, 2010 results). The table is radically different this year (2011 results) but I haven't looked at it in detail (I only downloaded it a couple of days ago, it came as 15 separate files and I haven't got it loaded into Excel yet) but I think CHB is somewhere in the 30s and way above either of the independent schools (KEHS at 71 ahead of KES), a bit of a dramatic improvement over the 120 in the 2011 table - that was a particularly bad year for A-levels at CHB, the headmaster's end of year newsletter was quite grumpy! KES is usually around the 20s, KEHS varying between 20s and 40s, CHB usually around 80.

Revised FT rankings based on averages from all years, CHG seems like a strong consistent performer, as with shares the year-on-year numbers may go up as well as down. I did hope numbers would help make my decision for me but I suppose stats to be taken as one element of the decision making process.

Firstly congratulations on getting the desired result for your DD. I hope I can help - I have a son in his first year at FW and DD in her 3rd year at CHG so have an insight into both schools. Firstly both schools are fantastic and your child will do well in either. They seem to set similar amounts of homework (unfortunately quite a lot) and work at similar levels. Both have termly assessments.
FW advantages - they have already been doing IB in sixth form so I think will be at an advantage when IB replaces GCSEs
Seem to have more emphasis on extra-curricular activities (DS went climbing and loved it)
Great inter-house competitions
Cheaper school uniform!
CHG advantages
It's a girls school - I think I would feel a bit for girls at FW since they are in a minority - there is a lot in the school about rugby etc. Girls only make up about a third of the places.
It's in nicer area and is more accessible with more public bus routes.
Has a great swimming pool (important to kids!!!)
There really isn't too much to choose between the schools but I feel Five Ways emphasis on producing "rounded" individuals is really good. Both have new heads so things are likely to change in the next few years; personally I feel FW's loss is greater as the head was a very strong leader and you could see the kids look up to him. Very interesting to read your perspective, thanks. We are looking for an environment that will nurture ‘rounded’ characteristics as well as a strong focus on academics; the school that can best deliver a sensible balance between the two is going to be our preferred choice.
As well as the here and now also trying to consider the future. Very difficult as things seem to change on a weekly basis, but as a best guess, the focus on A* attainment as way of differentiating will only set to increase, including the intro of the IB and the impact on uni future, appreciate its is a long way away, but only being able to make this decision once, just want to ensure that the right decision is made.

Not as up to date as I would have liked but the trend shows that private schools, relative to FT rank, seem to fare better when placing students at top universities, but overall an overwhelming majority of the children across all the schools stand a good chance of getting into a good university and the OCU% is also very reassuring. I'm sure another set of numbers will point in another direction and so on and so on.
Not as confused but still confused - good luck to all making decisions this weekend.
