just spoke to wirral education department

Post by Bati »

After hearing rumours about more children passing 11+ i was getting in a bit of a panic thinking we wont get in due to distance so i thought i would phone them and ask them
spoke to lovely women who said more children sat the exams this year she said about 100 more
The % of children who have passed is about the same as last years % although this will mean more children down to more sitting
She said she couldnt give me exact number as some children are still sitting the exams due to illness and late applications
Feel slightly better but not much :(
hope this info helps

Do you know the % pass for wirral last year?
We are also a distance from schools and feel prepared for the fact that despite getting a good score my ds will miss out on a grammar school place. I have also heard of a lot of passes in fact I only know of one fail

They wouldnt tell me a % for last yr or this yr just that the about 100 more sat the test this yr and the % passing is roughly the same :(
It is worrying and i am worried by the fact that they said children are still sitting the test so it could go up
my dd really wants wirral grammar - last yr they went to 7.9 miles for the girls. We live 7.1 so its a close call
why they cant just tell us how many passed last yr and how many so far this year i dont know, at least then we would have an idea of our chances of getting a place

i am currently deciding what to do over our 2nd choice. At the moment we have put west kirby 2nd and upton 3rd. Dont know whether to change it and go with upton as 2nd as we prefer upton to west kirby, but there is no school bus.
I have worked it out that driving her there and back would mean a 60 mile trip every day with a cost of about £60 a week  which is just not do able.
However i have heard there is children (not many) who do go from here. Apparently they go by car to where the school bus is. Hoping to find out today more details on this and cost
I might suggest car sharing would save them some money and myself :)

Had the same problem last year with distance, DS lives 12miles away and still managed to get him into Wirral grammer via Appeal, having to take him everyday though, 50 mile round trip each day but your DD/S education is much more important than the cost of petrol.

I agree but £240 every 4 school weeks might be difficult to find - is a child's education more important than providing for neccessities?

Found out yesterday information on getting to Upton. Upton was kind enough to pass my phone number onto other parents who live in the area so they could phone me, which they did :D
Seems parents car share in driving the girls to either the school or to where they can get school bus from. Most kids want to go via the bus so they can spend more time socialising with their friends.
This means the cost will now be about £20 a week instead of about £60 :D
very happy with this so yesterday changed preferences, kept wirral as 1st but Upton is now 2nd with west Kirby 3rd

I think it is as well to remember that a child will want to meet up with new school friends after school/at weekends and holidays. Social aspects of growing up are just as important (if not more important) as academic achievement. I understand that parents want the best education for their children, but there has to be a balance and children also need to have relaxation time. All schools will have bright kids and not so bright. There will be bad behaviour and bullying in all schools. I feel that the over emphasis on all matters to do with school (bordering on hysteria) is not healthy for a family.
