Henrietta Barnet or Nonsuch? Which one would you choose?

Post by 99mums »

My DD was lucky enough to get into the top group in both 11+ exams of Henrietta Barnnett and Nonsuch. DD loves both schools, and DH and I have not much information except different league tables and from a few encounters with both schools. HBS seemed better in academic but staff from nonsuch were friendlier and more helpful to us. Both schools are commutable but we will consider moving house anyway. That will be another story.

My questions is - Which school will you choose? Why? What was your experience with the two schools?

I'm a bit stuck so any helps/advices/comments will be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure you have seen this table by now but that should decide it for me! :)

Tops rankings for students reaching Cambridge Qualifying Standard.

OP, I am wondering where you live that could make either school a possibility. I would however warn you to treat the evening standard article with caution. HB takes over 30 new pupils who have done exceptionally well in other schools into its 6th form. Nonsuch is just stuck with the pupils it chose at 11.

Nonsuch is just stuck with the pupils it chose at 11.

The above is inaccurate. See extract below from the 6 form admssion criteria . They take 10 new students ecah year, usually more as a number of the girls leave at the end of year 10 either to go to other schools or to , 6 th form colleges or do not meet the criteria to stay on .

"9.1.2. The anticipated Sixth Form capacity in Year 12 is 180 students.
9.1.3. A minimum of 10 places will be offered annually to external candidates..

2. Entry Criteria
9.2.1. The minimum requirement for entry to the Sixth Form is an average points score of 50 over the best eight GCSE/IGCSE subjects, normally gained at one sitting, but excluding community languages. The expectation is that prospective students will be sitting at least nine GCSE/IGCSE subjects. (NB. GCSE/IGCSE short courses are awarded half the points score of full courses.)
9.2.2. All candidates must have GCSE/IGCSE Grade B or above in both English (Language) and Mathematics.
9.2.3. Candidates should have at least GCSE/IGCSE Grade B in each of the subjects they wish to study at AS Level.
9.2.4. Candidates wishing to apply for Chemistry, Biology or Physics must have studied at least Dual Science at GCSE/IGCSE and have achieved at least a B grade at GCSE/IGCSE in the science/s which they are applying to study
9.2.5. Candidates wishing to study Psychology should have achieved at least two B grades in Science subjects.

Fair enough Catcool; but this is from the Henrietta Barnet site:

'A minimum of 31 external candidates are admitted into the Sixth Form. Students wishing to join Year 12 from other schools are invited to an Open Afternoon, on Thursday 15th November 2012 (times to be confirmed) when they will receive information about the School and the Post-16 courses.

The minimum requirement is 6 A grades at GCSE and at least B grades in English and Mathematics if these subjects are not being taken at AS Level or A2 Level. All applicants should have GCSE A grades in the subjects to be studied at AS Level.'

As HB is only a 3 form entry school, these extra 31 will make a far greater difference to the overall percentage of achievement.

Are these 31 extra places or replaces current students?

I got the impression they were extra students, as they would form an entire extra class, taking the pan from 93 for Y7-11 to 124 in 6th form.

Thanks.
Yes, looks like an extra form plus the places from the non-qualifying existing students.
