Question re 11+ questions!

Both DS and his friend got 140/140 in this year's Maths papers BUT they realised they put different answers for one of the questions. Is that possible?

(I know its possible one of them has mis-remembered the answer, but they both seem very sure).

Yes, its possible. 140 is the standardised score. To get the maximum standardised score you do not need to get maximum raw score. In other words, for example one child can get 38/50 raw score and another gets 41/50 but both are standardised to 140. These numbers are ones which I have made up in order to explain what I mean, please don't quote these. So, its possible that

a) both your DS and friend got this question wrong

OR

b) one got it right and the other wrong

but both got the same standardised score.

Not all areas apply maximum scores. So in a different area where not all children take the test, and the standardisation is applied against only those who take it, and with no fixed maximum they would probably have got different scores unless they both got it wrong. But with cohort only standardisation, no maximum, and opt-in they probably wouldn't have got 140 either!
