Appeal on medical grounds
We are in kent. My child didn't pass the 11+. We will be appealing on medical grounds. Please could you give me some advice on how to prepare for the appeal. My child has a history of ill health since birth, and had a severe episode that started a month before the tests and the run up to it and during it. My child was on strong medication which affected eating and sleeping.
One issue we have is that the school will probably not support us in the appeal. Ever since my child started at the school, the school has only ever seen an 'ill child with SEN' (on school action plus). My child is actually very bright but has certain issues to do with SEN which any future school would need to cater for, but these are not academic. My child would cope well in our local gs. The current school has a seniors which they hoped my child would attend and are still very much pushing us in that direction, but it is private and we can no longer afford it. Even if we could we would not keep him there as they do not have my child's best interests in mind.

Thanks for the background info.
Your focus must be on proving academic ability/potential. (You can win an appeal with evidence of high academic ability but no extenuating circumstances. You won't win with extenuating circumstances but insufficient evidence of high academic ability.)
If the school is not very supportive, you may need to consider an EP report.

In terms of academic ability, we plan to:
Get an ed psych report (which you have advised)
Show high ability in History (the gs has a specialism in Humanities) by obtaining a report from a history teacher.
Doctor reports which will say that our child needs to walk to school, plus all the benefits of being close to home for his medical needs.
Is there anything else we should obtain?

Have you spoken to the school that you are appealing for to see what they be able to offer for your dc in terms of support? I don't know where you are but it is worth speaking to the school senco to discuss what support your ds would need. You can get lots of advice on the sen forum here too.............

and appeals panels want to see sound academic evidence that shows that the 11+ result was a blip. They will take account of medical issues but if the academic results aren't there you are unlikely to win an appeal. Have you got a back up school that you are happy with? Once again it is worth sounding out the senco at any school you may want or have to consider. I have had to do this and have had surprising results which led to us disregarding one school that we had favoured
