A little vocab puzzle

Post by Okanagan »

ds came across "covert" and "overt" in Scrabble and asked if there are any other words where you can make the antonym by adding just one extra letter? I can think of (a)political, (a)symptomatic, (a)synchronous, (a)symmetrical. Any more? Any others which don't start with "a"?

Good question:

(a)typical
(a)********

Did type the word in but it must be a banned word on here. It is se*ual!

I can only think of ones made by adding the prefix "a" too. Covert and overt is neat.

I've been trying to think of French words, but no joy so far.

(ir)rational
(il)logical

They don't quite fit your rule as you have to double the first consonant but similar nonetheless.

Again doesn't quite fit the rule, but how about 'prescribe' and 'proscribe'?

No that's 2 letters different - if you allowed that you'd be including all the "un"-anything words.

As a variation on the theme - flammable and inflammable - by the normal rules they ought to be antonyms, but they're actually synonyms!
