Recommendation for Non Verbal Reasoning practice

Post by Araucana girl »

Hi folks,
My dd will be sitting the CCHS exam in Essex in 2013 - this uses the CEM papers produced by Durham which I am informed are used in this region. Our normal 11+ exam doesn't use NVR but the CCHS papers will. Could anyone kindly recommend practice papers for NVR for my dd? She has a tutor but he is not used to doing NVR as we haven't needed it in Essex, I need to find some examples that will be used for CEM so that I know we are on the right track.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Try Bond books for NVR, we used them and they were very useful.

Thank you. I have bought the NVR - How to do ... by Bond and the book 1 for 10 minute tests by Bond (9-10) to start her off. Also bought the GL assessment test papers, not sure how relevant these will be.

Is NVR like VR in that there are a certain number of types of question and only some are tested in the CEM papers or do you just not know what will come up? I appreciate that they do not let you buy past papers.

Thanks again.

Araucana, is it only CCHS that is switching to CEM or are all the CSSE schools?

I must admit, I do like the CSSE exam. From what I can remember when ds1 sat the CSSE exam several years ago, although he passed for Kegs, he did say that he found the CSSE English section tougher than the Bham (CEM exam). I wonder why are they switching :?: Is it to incorporate the NVR?

Anyhow, Bond is good preparation for NVR. Ultimately, what CEM are testing is their spatial awareness and speed. You get fewer q's for the nvr- see sticky and most are unconventional.

In the past, CEM have also had rotating 3d shapes in their exam. We haven't seen that in B'ham for a couple of years now, but since this seems to be Essex's first launch of CEM, it may well appear. Try the Alpha series for the more unconventional NVR questions.

Hi,

You can also try to download iPad Apps called 11+ Non Verbal Reasoning (or 11 plus NVR) which has 7 sections with 30 questions in each section. My daughter has lots of fun with it.

It's these papers listed on here. Click on link.

I took up your suggestion about the Alpha series some time ago, but they were out of print then too - it seems they are not coming back :? it's a shame though, they looked good.
