Advice on Bucks HT review please

My daughter's 11+ results were 107 and 116. She was expected to pass but on the day of the first exam she had a complete meltdown and cried through the exam - the teacher told me that they had made a note of this. I went to see the headteacher who advised me that she believed my daughter should be going to grammar school and she would support an appeal if necessary. My daughter was distressed during the week between the 2 tests, she was extremely low and worried. She sat her second test alone and although she felt better about it, her nerves got the better of her on the day. Normally my daughter performs very well in exams but it appears that the fear of failure and not being able to go to the school she had set her sights on proved overwhelming.

Please could you advise on what basis I might request a review?

It is to be anticipated that many parents will be coming on to the forum anxiously seeking advice whether they should focus their efforts on a review or an appeal. There is no easy answer to this. All we can say is "Think very carefully - be aware that if you opt for a review, the scope of any subsequent appeal to an independent panel could be severely curtailed".

Alas I'm facing an appeal too.

Knowing a Bucks primary head who has an idea where the new scheme is coming from, they feel it will be an improvement on the old system. The secondary heads driving it are emphasising 'data, data, data' apparently.

I certainly hope that's the case...!

Thanks - the guidelines ask for some sort of question (however general) to be posted, otherwise we've nothing to respond to on here!

I'm sure I won't be divulging any personal information if I reveal that your question is "wondering if we might be better to wait for a full appeal ......... ?"

Unfortunately this is not something we feel we can take responsibility for.

We're happy to explain the pros and cons of reviews/appeals - and for some parents a disadvantage of a review could well be the narrow timescale in which to gather evidence and put together a case.

Thank you. Clearly this is not your responsibility and I wouldnt take your advice as instruction. But given the infomation about ht reccommendation, a review seems futile and I wondered if you a. see it the same way and b. think that the additional time for dd to prove herself would potentially overcome this at the appeal stage or would it still work against her to the same extent?

Sorry to be a pain but it's such a hard decision, I feel i have to consider all of the issues thoroughly.

Any advice on here is clearly far from being any sort of an instruction, and we have studiously tried to refrain from advising anyone whether they personally would be better off at a review or an appeal - not least because we don't really know enough about how the review will operate in practice!

It's true that the time lag between now and any appeal - if put to really good use - could provide a useful opportunity for more and better academic evidence. That has to be balanced against whether your preferred grammar school is one of those likely to be oversubscribed, and whether - in that situation - you would have good reasons for wanting a place that might outweigh any prejudice to the school.
