Wilmington Girls

Post by Growingtofast »

Hi

I've just discovered Wilmington Girls specialism is Maths and computing. DD is currently in year 4 and maths is not her strongest subject. DS is currently at Wilmington Boys so was hoping for a sibling place if she passes 11+ in 2014.

Not sure of current progress in maths, parents evening in 3 weeks.

Is just passing 11+ good enough for me to apply, or would a weakness in Maths be a cause for concern. We are tutoring her at home and I worry that if she passes, she would struggle as it is not a subject that comes to her naturally. We don't really have a good alternative unless we also apply to Bexley for Chis and Sid but no guarantee of a place as we live in Orpington.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you

What does their admissions policy say? Also, I wouldn't take any of these specialisms too seriously.

I agree with the above , dont take the specialism too seriously. They get admitted based on their scores only and not based on their interest in maths. That said, she will need to do brush up on maths before the Kent and Bexley test. Most children travel from Bromley and Lewisham to chis and sid, so it is worth taking the Bexley test as well. Keep your options open.

Hi Growingtoofast
My dd is in year 8 at WGSG. Although their admission policy does award 10% of places to the top Maths scores in the Kent test, this admission criteria comes after the sibling rule has been applied, so with a brother at WGSB a pass will get your dd in. They give any child struggling with Maths extra assistance. My dd's friend - along with quite a few others - struggles with Maths and in year 7 had a 6th form Maths 'buddy', it was very discreet and took place out of the classroom. They are not streamed in Maths until year 8. We also live in Orpington.

Sorry if this repeats an earlier question, but I've been trying to find out how far out WGSG offer places and how likely an offer as far out as Longfield/New Barn is?

Thanks!

Catchment this year was 6.45 miles max. For Wilmington grammar for boys
You have to be aware that pan announced is 120 but heat teacher admitted at appeal first stage that he can take extra 30- but obviously does not want to take any non Qualification case . A good way for cherry picking...

Will the Girls Grammar be similar? We're interested to know if they offer places as far as New Barn or Longfield.
