Grammar and Punctuation

Post by um »

Many of us will have heard that Gove wants to bring 'core' English skills back to the curriculum. This includes a traditional understanding of grammar and punctuation.

Of course, he is, funnily enough, 'freeing' most schools from actually having to follow the National Curriculum by offering Academy status, but that's by-the-by.

I saw this interesting little test on the Guardian. http://www.guardian.co.uk/teacher-netwo ... -quiz-test" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

What do you think?

I scored 13/14 although I don't kknow which one I got wrong (possibly the last one). I have to say I learnt virtually none of it in school (child of the 70s when grammar wasn't trendy) and have gathered most of it through reading and seeing my children's homework!

same here scarymum: I got 13/14 but couldn't find out which one I got wrong. Again, don't remember it from school though (or even my English degree :shock: ) : I learnt much of it whilst preparing my children for the 11 plus!

Not sure whether to post on the Dodgy Calls thread or this one.

News of my brilliance is travelling fast: I have just had a call from the University of Cantabria. I didn't speak and had to google the number to discover who it was.

Not in favour of this new testing system. 70 marks awarded: 50 for grammar and 20 for the spelling.

Very little creative writing done in schools anyway but to discard the writing test...! :(

btw: another one with 14 / 14 :roll:
