A Level Choices

Choices:
1. music
2. double maths
3. either economics or business studies

How appealing this combination is? For those not good in essay writing, would business studies an ideal subject? or both (econ / biz studies) are not suitable?

Your advice is appreciated.

I presume you mean Maths and Further Maths as 'double maths'?

Economics is a better choice than Business Studies.

What degree is this aiming for? There are not many courses it will prepare for ...

yes, double maths is referring to Maths and Further Maths.

Actually 90% is aiming for studying music in uni, or perhaps a double degree in Music + Econ or Biz Studies.

If there is no such combination, might major in music only.

You need to look on exam board websites to see how many essays are needed; I would think there are other A levels with fewer 'writing' demands.

Business Studies is not really advisable if your DC is of high aptitude. Economics is more highly regarded, but this is not one of the Russell Group 'facilitating' subjects as stated in their booklet 'Informed Choices.' Neither is Music actually, but as Music is your aim, this is neither here nor there.

That's true, Kingfisher, but they do say that choosing two as facilitating subjects is fine.

There are some advanced level subjects which provide suitable preparation
for entry to university generally, but which we do not include within the
facilitating subjects, because there are relatively few degree programmes
where an advanced level qualification in these subjects would be a
requirement for entry. Examples of such subjects include Economics,
Religious Studies and Welsh.

I think Economics would be a fine choice along with Maths, FM and music.

My daughter had decent offers last year from Russel Group universities - her A Level choices were English, Drama and RS(Philosophy and Ethics) , she only did those three through AS and A2, and currently studies English at a non RG uni (first choice, and much preferred option ) Also my son did Geography, RE and Music, and similarly had no problems at all getting offers, from all his choices - again many RG universities there, although he also preferred another uni that wasn't at the time RG, but is now .

i note there are some joint degrees offered by Royal Holloway, e.g.
- econ with music (music as minor 25%)
- maths & music (50:50)
- music with political studies (music 75%)

I am not sure if these degree programs are highly demanding. My son thinks it's more interesting to study than purely a 100% music degree.

He will be taking DipABRSM piano end of this year and he is also learning vocal and organ (grade 5) in school.

Is this the post GCSE choice? I would be a bit concerned that there are only 3 different AS subjects in there. Depending on future plans, the lack of a 4th 'different' subject may be a problem.

Maths and F Maths are two different A levels - they are treated as two separate subjects.
