Call The Midwife - Any watchers??

Post by chocolate »

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone is watching 'Call The Midwife'? I have been really enjoying the series, but was horrified at last Sundays episode!! What did you think? It kind of ruined it for me!!! I appreciate that that's how it was in those days, but did it have to be quite so graffic?? I have been watching it with my 12 year old DD, it is something we have been enjoying watching together. Before I started watching it with her I struggled with the idea of whether it was appropriate for her age (I'm very particular about what my DC's watch!!) All episodes were fine until last Sundays, I had to tell her to look away so that I could fast forward it on two occasions (termination and Trixie on a date with dodgy guy!!!) - now I'm not sure whether to allow her to watch it in future???

I love call the midwife. Every week we sit down to watch it as a family. I wasn't prepared (as we started watching it 2 minutes into the episode) to have to explain to a 10 year old what an abortion is. The way it was filmed with the nail varnish was very clever but made me feel physically sick. I'm still amazed that it was in the 50's, my mother's generation... Horray for contraceptives so other women do not have to suffer the fate of illegal abortions. In the book the actual woman dies :( so at least we were not faced with that ending to put the kids to bed on.

My 84 year old Mum was a nurse and nursed women in a similar state to that poor lady. I love the programme and will still be watching this week. I would have had no problem discussing abortion with my children when they were 10. I do, of course, respect that we are all different and maybe some people would have found that it was scheduled a little too early on a Sunday evening.

I was surprised that it was on before the 9pm watershed.

We were also counting our blessings that things have improved and then were hit with the horrendous witness statements of the 12-year-old in the so-called 'Oxford exploitation trial'. Tragically it still goes on.

Perhaps such hideous things ought to be part of the education of our youngsters? Though I still wonder if it should have been shown later.

I also love the programme and perhaps because only my OH and I were watching I didn't think about the time it was on or that children might be watching.

It never really occurred to me that it was a difficult topic for children, mine have never been interested in it.

I watch it with dd (and ds2...although he's too embarrassed to admit it ) and usually its okay..dd did mention it to her Grandpa the moment she walked through the door  ,but we discussed it and she told me the worst bit of the programme was actually the baby who was bitten by the rat!

Fran, my 84 year old mum was a nurse (in London) too. Wonder if their paths crossed :D

The 1967 abortion Act was probably the only good policy the Liberals ever had!
