Out of area Warks, what grounds to use for appeal

Post by AS786 »

I am hoping for some advice please. My son scored 303 and he is 31st on the W/L for LSS. We are out of area and we are waiting for 18 March to see if there has been any movement on the waiting lists. We are going to appeal. The qualifying score for the waiting list was 303, so we are not appealing on grounds of non-qualification. I just wanted to check, am I correct in thinking that our appeal will be on grounds of over subscription? The more I read around this, the more confused I get.

Also, does anyone have any experience of being in this position and also about waiting list movement for LSS historically?

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

There are some figures relating to appeals rates in Warwickshire on this thread. Don't read to much into the high success rate for LSS though, as it has always been the case that they've officially offered the same number of places to boys and girls - but then LSS which has more room would take on a lot more as a result of appeals. This year they've upped the official numbers, so probably haven't got as much room for manoevre and might be less keen to just accept the majority of appeals.

You don't need to argue about qualification, but you could - if you wanted to and have the evidence - argue that your son was expected to score more highly than he did. See B1(b):

You do need to give reasons for wanting or needing a place:

Hello
Thankyou Okanagan and Etienne for your advice. We don't really have any grounds for appealing for non-qualification, there are no extenuating circumstances. As I understand it, even with a higher score, he would still be on the W/L in the first round of offers as we are out of area. Having a higher score would have only had the effect of placing him higher up the waiting list. So, it seems logical to appeal on the grounds of over-subscription as he has scored the QS for the W/L and we have plenty of evidence to back up his academic levels and support from the head teacher and class teacher. We will mention logistics of getting to the school (v short journey from where we live).

We have asked the headteacher and class teacher for a letter of support/reference. They are very happy to supply this and have asked me for an idea of what they need to write in the letter. I know it's only a small point, but who should they address the letter to and also is there a framework of what they should include. I can't find anything on the q and a section other than a sample letter from a tutor.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

many thanks once again.

It depends what points they're writing in support of.
If oversubscription will be an issue at appeal, it would help to have some support for why this particular school would be suitable (for example, ‘a keen interest in science’ if the school specialises in science)

The letter should be addressed to The Independent Appeals Panel
c/o whoever is organising the appeals (e.g. the Appeals Clerk).

It could begin "Dear Members of the Panel".
