Post by Erin »

Hi
Does anybody have any info regarding the 11 plus for the Halifax Grammar Schools? Which are the best practise papers?

Thanks,
Erin

Hello Erin,

Welcome.

The Calderdale exams have in recent years been GL Assessment Verbal Reasoning and a Maths paper. There is also a writing component which is completed by all applicants but it is only used to select the final 70 candidates. (In combination with the VR and Maths paper)

Both the Maths and VR are multiple choice. Maths Paper is written by school but should only cover national curriculum topics (Worth 71 Marks) I used old sats papers, Bond papers etc.

VR (Worth 140 Marks)

The papers suggested in this thread are all applicable to the Halifax VR test.

That should get you started.

Thank you for this information. Do you have any idea approximately how many children take the test.

Best wishes

I haven't heard the figures for this year but it is usually around the 800/900 mark.

Thank you. You have been most helpful. Do you know how many marks have been the cut off point previously?

Many thanks,

It is ranked order so the scores can vary from year to year. People tend to quote the rank order rather than standardised scores. Even when they do quote the standardised scores it doesn't tell you anything very useful.

I would aim for scores in the 90%+ in VR. They may not need to be that high but it is a reasonable figure to work towards. The maths is only KS2 topics but by all accounts it is a hard exam.

Hello again!
Do you know if the maths questions are in a similar format to KS2 SATS or 11 plus?

Sorry for the constant questions, it's just that there is so much information available, I would like to be sure I start off on the right track.
